How feasible is growing sweet potatoes and potatoes in the home garden?
I've been looking up spacing requirements for them and it seems like you need to provide them with quite a lot of space between rows and plants. My dinky little suburban garden doesn't really have the space to accommodate many of them with optimal spacing, without reducing the space for other plants that I want to grow.
Are these spacing requirements of 1 to 1.5 feet between plants absolutely critical? I don't want to jam too many plants into one space if all of them will be fighting for nutrients. I also have concerns about the yield, it seems like we would get only a few meals out of whatever we planted.
Any input is appreciated - my family has a knack for picking space-heavy plants, which is annoying when you're the one who does all the gardening.
