Anyone use a green laser?
When stargazing with more than one person, it's impossible for another person to follow where in the sky you are pointing. Parallax, and all that. So, if you're going to point something out, you need something with length, like a beam of light. If you point a laser at a star, everyone in the group will see which star you're pointing to.
I remember being /out/ with one guy who used a high powered white flashlight, pointing up. But a green laser would be better. It has to be green, because that particular wavelength reacts with the atmosphere, making the beam visible from the side--something you don't get with red lasers (of the same power).
But I worry that 1) muggles will wrongly thing you're trying to lase aircraft, and report you to the police ("muggle" is a geocaching term for people who don't know what you're doing, and will assume the worst). And 2), some other muggle might think you're displaying a distress signal. I'm near the coast, so this may be a possibility from boats on the water.
Pic related.
