I don't think people should rely on schools to teach them much outside of basic math and the like, but showing kids how to safely manage a fire or differentiate between poisonous and edible plants definitely wouldn't hurt. Putting your kids in scouts is probably a better option as long as you can find a troop that hasn't been ruined by soccer moms though.
