I read Huckleberry Finn when I was 12 and I think that's when I first realized there was so much out there, even in my country alone. I was a very sheltered kid and the outside world was so fascinating to me.
I've always been a reader, but from then on I sought other "adventure" books (not necessarily all /out/). London and Kerouac are some obvious ones, and there's actually even a pretty great scene in 1984 that really shows how powerful /out/side can be in a 'broken' society (I feel many dystopian novels have this scene, actually, now that I think about it). Currently I'm reading pic related, if you're into train hopping I recommend it.
Also, not lit, but music definitely gets me in the mood for going /out/, and bluegrass/the blues lyrics tend to be more about traveling and nature more than any other genre, I feel.
