The exciting thing about sailing is the idea of making great voyages. There are way cheaper hobbies that offer WAY more excitement and freemdom.
I live next to a large lake with a shit ton of very wealthy people and a shit ton of sailing boats. Even during absolutely perfect conditions for sailing, 99.9% of the boats just lie there unused.
For lakes, get a kayak. You can use those to explore all the nooks and crannies of the shore. With a sailboat, all you can do is go up and down and up and down and up and down.
