How come no survival people or bug out bags utilize fire pistons? Obviously it requires char cloth but it can be easily made with cotton cloth and an altoids tin in a fire.
Everyone recommends ferro rod, matches, steel wool/battery, flint/steel, magnifying glass etc even on the survival shows, they never use the fire piston.
I see a couple being sold on etsy --- simple ones for 15-20 bucks. Even on amazon there are some expensive 30-50 ones that look nice and everything. They give you char cloth, extra o-ring and drawstring pouch. I want to get one off etsy for 18 bucks, cheap wood on it but free shipping. There are youtube vids showing how easy it is to make with a simple drill but I won't bother since I don't have power tools. Probably cost 5-7 bucks then theres time doing the work and shipping. Might as well buy one.
So why isn't it used or shown more often? Is it unreliable?
