Long ago, I embarked on a week-long hike from the western end to eastern end of Anticosti Island, a remote and drastically-underpopulated place in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It's known as one of the prime hunting locations of Quebec, due to the overpopulated droves of whitetail deer that exist from no predator populations living on the island.
On my fourth day of the hike, I reached a central highlands region of the island, which was comprised of boreal meadows and muskeg. The meadow I needed to cross was around three kilometres long, and was swarming with tall grasses. There wasn't an inch of the space where vegetation wouldn't graze you.
