I'm not sure how much smaller you're actually wanting to go, but I have a Daiwa sealine x40sha with a couple hundred yards of #30 mono and can cast 2 ounces on it with no issues with the right rod. i'd probably drop down to the x30sha if i was gonna buy it again. if you're planning to do mostly lures, however. get a spinning reel with no bait runner.
