Old silver coins in trashy areas (my thing) you will need a good machine to weed out iron junk. E-TRAC, CTX 3030, XP Deus. You are going to suffer big time trying to get old silver coins with a cheap detector.
If you want modern coins / jewelry you can get a cheaper machine and dig everything. A Fisher F2 - F5 or Delta would do the trick nicely. Stay in areas without too much trash. Soccer fields, tot lots, school fields are OK. Picnic grounds can be really exhausting with all the trash.
The last option would be a water-proof machine. IMO the most successful gold hunters are water hunters. The AT Pro seems like a good choice for this type of hunting.
