A couple of things to consider though: Campsite selection is key. IF you are somewhere that will allow you to drop down into the tree line then you should. Campsite selection will determine when you stop hiking. If there is a chance of high wind you will either have to stop early or hike late until you find somewhere suitable.
I don't buy into the cooky pitches like

If you are somewhere that won't allow to find a suitably sheltered place to pitch then a tarp is not your best option and you should go with a shelter that provides more weather proofing. If I'm heading to the hills and the forecast is for high wind I will leave the flat tarp at home and use a mid.
