Would appreciate any practical literature on getting around in the wild - basic gear, tents, what to prepare for in different climates and so on. Maybe some books on flora? Really overwhelmed, don't even know where to start. Also would be useful to hear, wherever you're from, how do the laws work regarding camping out in a tent in your country.

REI actually has really useful articles and videos on gear basics. As for books check out The Mountaineers press. They publish Freedom of the Hills and about a million other guide books, they're some of my favorites because they're written by instructors and veteran club members.

Advice? Okay let's start with this: figure out what it is you actually want to do, then specific advice can be given for your specific needs. "Getting around in the wild" doesn't mean anything. Do you mean disappear into the woods for weeks on end? Dayhikes or thru hikes? Kayaking the Mississippi? Pretending to be an operator? Hunting snow leapords? The gear, methods and knowledge needed varies greatly from activity to activity. A general purpose book of knowledge and general purpose gear will only get you so far.

If it's national forest you can pretty much camp wherever you want. Just make sure there is not a burn ban on before you light a fire. National parks require permits. State land varies from state to state.
