I found this while metal detecting today. Not sure what it could be. Any ideas? It fits into the cover above, which crumbled apart very easily. The rod itself feels very light and rubbed off onto my finger easily. it appears to have something in the center of it.

Could be part of a structure... The black thing above seems like it was part of the thing on the bottom. Possibly very old wood?

The 2nd picture is definitely some type of metal like copper or brass.
What does the rod feel like?
The black shit is probably some sort of stone now that I think of it. Try cleaning it perhaps? With some sand paper, and water.

i can't really clean the black thing because it'll just crumble away. i cleaned a little bit of the rod but it looks the same, and also it rubs away easily

it may not be an actual power plant fuel rod but it might be the smaller kind used in x-ray machines

Looks like something off a bucket or chainsaw handle, cut an end off, if it has a hole going all the way through, maybe - if not, probably screwed onto something, looks like there's a hole on the end though >>1244862

copper wouldnt be used in anything that needed mechanical leverage, which is something i was thinking the "gearing" raised edges might be used for, too soft, copper corrosion on the end in the hole leads me to think that it might have been something to do with heat, clay might have been the result of hiding it in mud, maybe a water filter or still? might be something from prohibition

What would that be used for though? If its made out of graphite then it will conduct electricity, so test that out.

nah, without knowing the history of the place you were detecting I have no idea. Those cores can date anywhere from about 1880-present. They're still used.

well your battery isn't that old, so the place has seen some use since then.

I find those cores in mining camps, they were commonly used in electric lamps, and probably for detonating dynamite. When I find battery casings with them they range in size from little batteries about the size of a D cell all the way up to larger lantern batteries about the size of 6v modern. Yours looks like one of the larger lantern batteries, they were in common use from about 1900-1980-ish.

$250-$350 US.

You can get a detector much cheaper than that but they're crap and you'll quickly get sick of digging tons of trash.
