r/vagabond on reddit has some good material, there's Squattheplanet.com.

Try to find a catch out/crew change guide from some train bums, you'll be able to see them with their dirty ass hippy clothes, black bandanas, and maybe an instrument or two. Terrible fucking people. Just awful.

Some are obviously gang/drug related, but others are just junkies or loonies killing a hobo or isolated student on adventure for his social security card. The homeless are no saints, there is a reason they get run out of small towns.

Your 12yo is showing. In the 2000's vice was great, which is where that series is from. Hilariously, VICE made another train hopping documentary in 2012 and it was god awful- only 2 years after David Choe's season 3 of Thumbs Up (which is in China).
