Don't lump mountain west in the same category as west coast. Shit's completely different in terms of laws and local culture. For example, 2 of the top 5 states with the loosest guns laws are in the mountain west , while the coast has one of the worst and another 2 going downhill fast. There are also less restrictive laws and better attitudes towards going /out/, hunting, and better national forest and state park management and conservation. Culture in the East is comfier and superior than the west coast itself though, while parts of the mountain west are sort of a blend of the two.

Gonna be honest I loved living in western NC. It was in the mid/early 2000s and the depression hit that area hard and fast. Had no education besides a high school diploma. Was shacked up with a waitress on her grandfather's 60 acres since he moved to. Florida. I bounced from. Dead end job to dead end up, one point I was working at Walmart's quick lube and running a paper route and still could just about keep the lights on, that ontop of the fact I couldn't stand the chick I was living with and moving out would have litteraly made me starve. Had to move back home to PA and go to college. I make good money now but miss the area so fucking much, I miss blasting home on the blue ridge park way, stopping at random spots to hike. I miss country people being nice, I miss Mayfield ice cream, miss the smell of camp fires every night, missing blasting back trails on my dirt bike. Honestly I was happier when I had to hunt to feed myself then now when I make 100k+ a year working 3 days a week.

Even the pacific coast states aren't like that. Washington outside of King county and Oregon outside Portland and Salem are incredibly conservative states. That's the beauty. None of us utilize campgrounds, because we are all lone wolfs who stay a minimum of 20 miles /out/ into remote wilderness because misanthropy, but we can all enjoy the simulation of campfire banter as our source of meager socialization while still remaining isolated from each other in the real world. This, almost every "blue state," outside of Massachussettes and Connecticut, are basically liberal cities which rule over the conservative rural areas. People in upstate New York aren't the same as people in NYC, same with California, Illinois, Washington, Oregon, Maryland, etc. Massachusettes and Connecticut are the only states I've been too where everyone in the state is an asshole, the rural areas are all pretentious, rich, liberal whites and there a ton of cool wine aunts in every park.
