How windy is too windy to have a campfire?

In a rock fire ring, in an open field. Not a huge bonfire, just a cooking fire.
I'm going camping in a couple days, and the weather is saying 10+ mph winds in the evening. Can I safely make a fire?

what area are you in? in most cases, you could stack rocks higher to block the wind and keep too many embers from blowing out, but it really all depends on where you are and how big a fire risk there is.

Get a wind guard. Use sticks to hold it open around your cooking fire like a little fence, if wind is really strong. They are really inexpensive:

It's more what the conditions are/location. You could light a fire in 100mph winds in Scotland right now and be alright versus completely still in Australia and cause another 150000000 hectare fire from a stray ember.

if it's wet or snowy out embers are basically a non-issue. if it's dry try building a dakota fire hole or building a fire ring, and keep some water/dirt ready in case of flyaways

I would just like to add a couple things to this great advice. Avoid burning pine, poplar, and cedar. Don't put cardboard in the fire. One time I tossed a cardboard box on a small fire and glowing chunks of it were flying 60+ feet into the air because of the updraft on the fire. If you really want to be safe, and don't have a shovel make a hobo stove, just punch holes around the bottom of a coffee can and put a wire rack on top.
