Hi /out/,
Not sure if this belongs on /out/, /diy/, /biz/, or a combination of the three but I'll start here.
"I'm" set to inherit approx ~1000 acres somewhere in the southeastern USA. My grandparents are nearing their 80s and want to pass it down. Much of the land is covered in pine forests but about 50 acres are open fields and there is a house, stable, barn, and some random shacks. The question in the family is what to do with the land. My grandparents are opposed to simply selling it off.
This is a radical idea but I was thinking about establishing an English immersion school on the land and create a self-sustaining community while turning the land into timber fields/agricultural farmland. The students of the English school would be from around the world and they would have room/board/food/classes/recreation for free in exchange for working in the fields and the upkeep of the community. The only costs the students would incur would be the flights to and from and probably health insurance. The only paid "workers" would be the English teachers who double down as directors. The students would work/study on a 3/4day basis with days for excursions and recreation. Dorms + mess hall + classrooms would need to be constructed.
I know nothing of farming. I have a master's degree in SCLM and my father does real estate redevelopment.
Is this idea feasible? Would farmland of this size financially produce anything to support this operation? What kind of visas allow temporary work/study activities such as this? Is this a money pit or is there room for profitability? I'm open to anyone from 4chan to participating in this idea.
Any input/comments greatly appreciated.
