I've had type 1 diabetes for about 10 years now. Haven't really let it impact my outdoor life. Been hunting and camping and getting out and about every now and then with much success so long as I have food ready and a pen in pocket. Only real noticeable "problem" I have with it is that any person that seems to be familiar with the outdoors isn't so in-tune with understanding diabetes. They either completely exaggerate the situation making it seem like such a huge deal that they don't think I should be doing things like going outside or they don't really consider it an issue at all and think it's something I can just get over.

Just wondering what your guys experiences are.

I don't know much about type 1 diabetes, care to explain the issues you face while outdoors? I'm curious. My grandpa has type 2 but 'm sure there's some big differences.

Type 1 means I'm insulin dependent. My blood sugar will continue to rise unless I inject myself with insulin and it will spike when I eat food with carbs or sugar requiring another shot. This means I have to bring insulin with my wherever I go. It is recommended that insulin be kept in a cool place to keep it from going bad. One or two days out of the fridge is fine, but prolong exposure to heat will make it tainted.

Exercise is one of the ways that naturally reduces your level of blood sugar. So long hikes or prolonged physical activity will lower it to, in some cases, requiring me to eat food to raise it again.

It is mostly a hassle or inconvenience to someone who has good control over there levels of blood sugar, but can be life threatening to those that don't. Even someone like me who manages it extremely well can still get low and high blood sugar levels putting myself at risk. Being out and about in the woods puts me at even higher risk if something where to go wrong.

Essentially if you're more prepared than your average /out/doors man and more in touch with your body you should be fine, but like I said it is a hassle.

It is good to for people in your party to know medical conditions that can be life threatening so they can be aware. Even if they know nothing about it they can tell those that do your condition.

Yeah, it depends on the group. I don't go telling everyone (and don't expect others to) in the group the first time we go riding every bit of my medical history. If there's something big that has a good chance of causing an issue while we're out, yeah, it's nice to let someone else know beforehand.

I always carry fruit snacks or something sugary with me in case someone in the group does have diabeetus and their blood sugar crashes while we're innawoods. Hasn't happened to me but it has happened with others I ride with who have had to play medic in that situation.

When I'm guiding groups, as we're going over safety and operating procedures I usually mention "If anyone has any known medical issues that may arise while we're out, please let me know before we take off". I don't want to call anyone out in public, but a heads-up is really nice. Been thanked more than once for asking, made those people a lot more comfortable knowing the guide was competent and ready to deal with things.

Generally though, you're big boys out there. I trust that you can take care of yourself (And I expect you to be prepared for what weather we might expect, have enough water/food for the day, etc). Yeah, I carry extra gear just-in-case, but if you're "that guy" i'm not going to be real happy with you.
