If you plan on being a nomad I'd say a shell would be easier; although if you can get a nice sized van, maybe an Ecoline, that'd be better.

This. Theres a reason that "vanlife" is a trend. Probably your best bet.
Trailer might be easiest in terms of having space to move in, but you limit yourself on where you can take your vehicle (both off-road, finding parking etc). If you're trying to stealth, especially in urban areas, a truck shell is cheapest and easiest. Try throwing a small air mattress in the back of your car and seeing how much space you really need.

how long?
I spent numerous camping trips from over night to 2 weeks in this. it's fine for camping but not a living space. If you are going to do it though, get a truck with a back window and shell that opens to each other, being able to pass through without getting out of the truck would be nice. a van would be better.
not having a place to shit is a pain

Depends on your situation but I'd say for longer outings a trailer is great if you can afford a decent teardrop because you have a ton of extra room to store all your shit, which also means you can leave your sleeping setup ready to go without shit all over it all the time and having to set it up and rearrange stuff every night.

having camped in a truck with a topper, I'll say the following; ventilation is an issue, as is space. I'm 5' 11" and bump either my head or my toes on the 6 foot bed of my truck, and fuck sleeping diagonal because then there's no room at all. if the weather isn't nice enough for open windows your breath will create it's own humid microclimate and all your shit will feel damp.

Shell is more convenient in many ways - trailer is a pain in the arse if you've got it in town.
But... your truck is useless as a truck if you've built your home in the back.
What about a van? Though I'm assuming you're looking at using what you've already got.
Personally I'd go with the trailer.
Anyway... try to imagine your day to day with both.

Shell is easier if you're taking it innawoods, trailer if it's in town or maintained roads. I myself lived in a trailer, would drop it off at a storage unit when I didn't want to tow it around.
