This is relevant to my interests. I need ideas for food that doesn't spoil and doesn't need to be cooked. I've never hiked far enough to require carrying more than a single meal, but soon I'll be needing to carry two or three days worth of food. I was thinking of just filling something like an oatmeal cylinder with nuts, dried fruits, beef jerky, turkey jerky, and Clif bars. I don't know how much I'll need, though, or whether it will be nutritious enough, and it's likely to be a bit expensive.

I don't care for 3 days of food like that if I have the room to pack other more hearty meals. A few things I like to do with bannock(flour,baking soda,lard) is add brown sugar, raisins, and when its done pour honey on it. mmmmm

I'm going backpacking and need ideas for food that doesn't need to be refrigerated or cooked, as I won't be taking a stove and fires aren't always allowed. The obvious foods are nuts, dried foods, and jerky, but I'd like more ideas, if anyone has them.

I just had an idea, would it be smart to bring a premade dry mix for baking some biscuits and something like a dutch oven (though it'd get fucking heavy) along with some other cookables? Would doing this be better if I had a group of people with me and someone to be designated as the "food guy" or something?

We made that from scratch with flour and such. Just basic baking incrediants. And sitting around scraping sugary goodness out of a pan and into your mouth is not a bad cleaning experience.

it doesn't need to have cashew or pine seeds in it. A very very basic pesto is as stated basil(can be subsituted with other herbs, I've made it with spinach, mint, khale, etc) with olive oil garlic and some parmesan.

Sorry guys, I was far from in charge of this. But we basically made dough, used a Nalgene to press it down, covered it in brown sugar and chocolate chips, then rolled it like you see in >>195546 and cut the long roll with string to make little rolls (using a knife was a mess). Then we just cooked them till they looked like cinammon rolls. Worked out better than I expected.

First night of a long trip for me is steak,potato, and beer. Freeze the steak, will be thawed and ready to cook. I usually boil potato in some beer. Worth the extra weight on that first day to eat like a king.

Pesto is the goddamn best shit man has ever created. Combine with fresh pasta for divine exelency. Also, throw in some sundried tomatos in that shit. Shit is like ten billion kcal.

just make jerky and then crush it to powder, then dry whatever berry you want and crush that to powder too, then mix it with some liquid or solid fat(rendered)
then just roll it together into a ball or whatever you want, shouldnt go rancid for a long time if you do it right(equal parts of each)
itll harden and stay good for quite a while even without a refrigerator

this meal only works on day 1 because perishable foods

3 sausage links of your choosing. Take your water bladder and right before you head out, fill it to the brim with ice, top off with water. Put the sausage double bagged in your pack, right next to the water bladder. The ice will keep it cool for the first several hours.

Then cut the casing off the sausages, break them apart, fry them in a pan. Put to the side for now.

Make a packet of idahoan instant potatoes (these are horrible for your health but are tasty, ultrafast, and lightweight.)

Boil some water in your canteen cup and dump a packet of brown gravy into it.

Mix all 3.

Eat.

It's good.

You have to dry the meat first. Then put it in a food processor or coffee grinder (clean it out first, or not for a little kick) and pulse until it's powdered. As much as /out/ loves pemmican I don't think that many if them have actually tried it. Just take some jerky and some cliff bars. A food dehydrator is a lot of fun and very versatile for preparing backpacking food though, and they're not expensive so buy one and go nuts.

Do you guys think it would be okay to carry around a freshly opened container of almond milk in my pack for the weekend or do you think it would spoil? I'm just looking to take oats and some granola and have them raw with some berries I find and I prefer milk over water if it's raw.

Chorizo and potato hash
Just skin a chorizo sausage and break it up in a pan till it looks like ground beef, fry it, don't add any oil, there's enough fat in the sausage, add a grated potato, fry untill delicious.

Dampa with butter and jam, flour, water and salt/sugar, wrapped around a stick and cooked over the coals, oh my cub scout years.

I can second cinnomon rolls. It looks like a pain in the ass but if you have some Bisquick (it's just flour plus leavening agents, saves time) some shortening or margarine (fuck fridges) some cinnamon and sugar it's not too hard to get done. Granted I'm a culinary school grad...
You can make some pretty complicated stuff out there if you just bring the basics with you.
