i keep two in my house in case of flood or power outage or something that would interrupt my normal food supply for a day or two.
i keep 2 in my 4wd in case I break down somewhere out of phone reception range, so at least I can camp by the side of the road until help arrives.
when I go camping I always carry an extra 2 days of MRE in case of injury, bad weather or i get lost. At least then i know i'm good for long enough for help to find me.
