Camping/backpacking advice

So I need advice for spots to backpack and/or camp near & around Shenandoah county VA (specifically mount jackson. I am being my friends from northern VA: a fat Mexican, a West Virginian, an Eagle Scout, and me (a Eagle Scout)

I am from NoVA and am in mount Jackson to work for the summer, my friends and I have already done 10 mile day hikes around here but would like to do some camping. I’m looking for new spots. The fat Mexican has all the gear but little experience. I am the pack mule ( and ironically the skinniest). I have an off-road capable f-150 (mud tires and a skid plate).

Any ideas?

Reposting my question from the campsite rate thread.
I want to get /out/ but everyone I know is to busy, or wants to do designated campsite shit. My only options are solo-camp (which I'm currently leaning towards), or finding a stranger. How do you all find someone, or do you just solo camp? If you solo camp, how do you determine a trail to take?
I'm in Northwest Oregon if that helps. I haven't solo camped before, and I haven't really camped traditionally, but my last two units in the NG and USMCR loved field drills, so I'm very familiar going weeks without comforts, in a two-one man tent.

I have solo hiked in Maine, if ur up in PNW ik that going to Idaho will afford you nice trails that are relatively good for solo hiking

literally just find a spot and set up your fucking camp. if "dispersed camping" is allowed that is helpful from a legal perspective

re: how do you determine a trail to take... alltrails is a helpful website that is good for choosing hikes - it's pretty self explanatory but you can see a map of the area and a list of the hikes available with distance info etc and normie reviews

less trafficked ones are more fun for me, but most of the time these days I either go remote where there is no trails or find areas that are closed off or tresspass just bc I don't want to be around annoying normies

If you have not left your house for a year and breaking in a brand new pair of hiking shoes or something I would probably do no more than 10-15 miles round trip. If you are in National Forest or BLM land you can pretty much camp wherever, it's easy to find restrictions online with interactive maps from the various land management agencies.

I think what you refer to as "solo camping" is called backpacking and your "traditional camping" may be what they call car camping nowadays.
For the former you will want a good 40-60L internal frame backpack depending how long you're going out for, as well as an "ultralight" tent and sleep system. You can get away with $500-600 worth of gear to have a very good not-very-ultralight setup but it's a whole rabbit hole, you will be ok with pretty standard gear. Car camping you can do with a $20 walmart tent and bring a BBQ and 5 pounds worth of steak who cares

Thanks, I'll give that site a look! I was mostly wanting to do backpacking with a hammock. Was mostly thinking 1-2 day trips to start with.
By traditional camping I mostly meant camping in a tent and not a camper. Family only ever does camper type "camping", and I find that shit nearly as bad as being in the field with the military.
Got most of my gear figured out. Just need to figure out how I want to handle water.

I want to eventually build up enough skill to go into far trips, or trespass for the same reasons you mention. To me the whole point is getting away from people (with exception to a friend if I ever get one to commit to a trip). Thanks again for your input.

a hammock is definitely a good way to go to keep it light as you don't need a sleeping pad or bulky tent poles etc. I didn't mean to be too much of a consoomer shill I just know first hand that if you buy a bunch of mid-tier gear that is on the heavy side it can add up pretty quick and then a week long trip can be misery. I live in the desert so I always have to carry a ton of water so the weight may not be as much of a consideration to you. I personally use the Platypus 2L water bladders, they thread onto the popular Sawyer mini filter and are themselves popular. I was skeptical when I started using them but I feel they are worth the $16 a pop. The 1L Smartwater bottle also threads on and is lightweight and reusable, and again popular with hikers.

I'll have to keep those in mind. I found a nice easy trail to start on through alltrails, now just to get out there. I'll be around Mt. Hood, so that bag and filter would probably work well with stream water.
