How the hell do people survive out in the woods long term without farming? There's barely anything to eat unless you resort to eating worms and bark

Depends where you live. Acorns are great if you know how to get the tannins out. Can be eaten as is or made into a flour for bread or to thicken soup. If you find just a couple of big trees you’re pretty set. Hunter gatherers knew this and modern research suggest acorns might have been their most consumed food. Gathering the acorns doesn’t take much energy either unlike hunting. But ideally if you want to survive long term you will want some farming. Map out where all the big oaks are and dry the nuts for winter.

Depends on your area, but check for foraging guides. You'll find a lot of plants you wouldn't have found useful actually are, e.g. random weed is actually a root vegetable.

Where I grew up in Northern California many of the large boulders that are under huge oak trees have a bunch of holes pounded into them, like mortars, where the Indians would crush acorns into flour. There are a few boulders near where I grew up where there are like 50 of these holes in one Boulder.

The woods as you know them are very different than what the natives would have known. Almost every bit of forest has been logged, farmed, burned, and logged some more.

they don’t. when there were hunter-gatherers they were able to survive because they were in at least small family if not full extended family groups. they had division of labour. like in the case of many california indians like these>>2239308 the women spent all day grinding the acorns while the men hunted or foraged

Even an experienced forager is likely to die out in the wild over a long period of time. It's hard to have enough energy from the little food you get to continue the rough task of foraging every day. Like >>2239406 said, it would be much more viable with a group. A few people to go fishing each day, some to go harvest mushrooms and edible plants, some hunters, some women to prepare everything at camp, and a leader to make sure everybody is carrying their weight.

Natives would manage the woods to increase the variety and abundance of edible plants and wild game.

The forests we have now are overgrown with invasive species and empty of game larger than deer. And key species like American chestnuts and passenger pigeons are extinct.

If you were living in the woods how would you survive on hunting and fishing? I'm assuming you'd have to stick to small game (although if you had established yourself large game would be on the table), would that eventually hit you with the whole rabbit diet issue? Or would the fish supplement this? Do squirrels have a similar issue to rabbits in terms of leanness?

Over the course of years you plant native foods in your local Forrest's and wild places increasing the bioavailable wildlife for your eating enjoyment. Here I plug spawn mushrooms on dead trees, plant American groundnut, wild berries ( American elderberry recently) cattails, Jerusalem artichokes, plantain plants, chickweed, dandylion, edible clovers and native pulses other things considered weeds normies ignore and seeds are cheap af. I mostly do it for shit hit fan back stock but it improves the land and increases the amount of wildlife.
