I just cut the garlic into smaller pieces and boil them with the lentils. Not exactly the best spice for lentils there is, but it's better than no spice, and I generally don't care to pack or gather spices for the sake of taste. Garlic's nutritious, easy to pack, tasty, cheap, stays fresh, easy to prepare, and it's my hope that it drives at least some parasites away. That's just my general brand of cooking, I guess.
