Because white gas and kerosene can spill and spread fire across everything they touch. Propane is better, but can pool in low places and become explosive. CNG is best because it is lighter than air and will dissipate instead of collecting in low places. But CNG is harder to find.

The reason propane is a thing is because humans have been sissified and can not care for themselves, and as such they don't have the respect for white gas and the problems it can cause when mishandled.

plus LEDs don't burn out... they go for like 100,000-200,000 hours... which is like, bing on straight for 17-20 years.

color rendering kinda sucks with those still but they have some good LED trees that cobine several colors to a decent spectrum

Another thing Propane has going for it shelf life. A 1lbs propane cylinder is self-sealing and will last nearly indefinitely, whereas an opened can of white gas will slowly evaporate and "gum up" if left to sit too long.

However, 1lbs propane cylinders cannot be refilled or recycled.

So if you only use your lantern occasionally, propane is the better way to go. If you use your lantern frequently, white gas is the better way to go.

Or if you don't want to deal with either, get an LED lantern with a hand crank.

ocourse they are heavy and not something you´d bring up on a long hike but for a base camp scenario they are absolutely wondrfull and just having around. even the house they are great. or if you attend barbeques(?) for having some light when the night draws long

setting them up around camp to increase you area is a great comfort feature at night. they work especially well if you are out with multiple people so you have and easier time navigating around camp at night/dusk/dawn
and as mentioned above they just add so much for comfort

Old /out/ fag here. There are a plethora of reasons why Propane lanterns are better/worse than other fuels... I wont elaborate too much as i know most here in Chan land are trolls. So Ill cover the "base camp" light sources that I rely on...

Kerosene/#3 Diesel in a Petromax is my all time fav. a close second is white gas in Coleman, for efficiency and fuel consumption. I can run my 3, 1000watt equivalent lanterns on 500ml of liquid fuel for 7 hours. I can run my Coleman Northstars (1000watt) on one 1lb cartridge of propane per lantern for also... 7 hours. So obviously the weight/volume question could be answered right there...

So let me impart a little experience to this equation.
When I run a short-handed base camp (when a 14 hour day isnt enough time to take care of everything) I want, no... I need Northstar Propane lanterns... I don't have to take them down and re-pressurized them.... I can stay focused on cooking food and organizing gear for the next insertion. screw on the the bottle light-it/forget-about-it.

With that being said... If i am running base camp for a small intimate group and know that I will have the time to care about comfort/ambiance of the evenings unwind; well, no doubt I will use wick fed lanterns for "mood" lighting. The Petromax/pressurized white gas lanterns are used for the cooking/stageing area.
Long story short. If you need convenience and weight/space is not in question then Propane is the winning ticket. If you are going for nostalgia/ambiance and you don't care that you have to take them down and spend calories to pump 'em up again, then liquid fuel is your winner. BTW. I know this was never in OP's question but perhaps this bit of advice would help... If you airlifting your base-camp for a manageable group, use liquid fuels. It leaves lots of room for other goodies that paying guests will love... Like hot fresh buttered popcorn.

one thing I haven't seen mentioned in the thread yet is the ability to burn citronella in a kerosene-style lantern.

We do it all the time in summer, basecamp of course, not for hiking. The citronella keeps the bugs away, and as a bonus you can turn the flame up higher without sooting the globe.

And the kerosene/citro lanterns also give off a warmer yellow light that I prefer to the gas/gaz mantles

old fag here again.... LED's are awesome. I rely on them more than I care to admit; which mean not more than 2 days. However batteries die. Pezel headlamps can be dropped in the mud (faceplant) and frack up the connections/open circuit. Solar panels are bulky and troublesome. I honesty do not use them for for anything more than 3 day trips... However if you are going with experienced trekkers and you can train yourself to use the strobe option... 3 AAA batteries have lasted me 8 days straight of nothing but fire and headlamps to supply the light for after-dusk cooking/work.

I use(d) my lanterns mostly for flounder gigging or night fishing on the coast/bay. I have an old 220 that was handed down from my father in-law and the thing has to be 50 years old or better. I used it for 10 years before the generator started acting up. If I take some time and dismantle it, I could probably get it working again. I have three 288 (I believe) that were bought over the last 10 years and all died within 5 years. I've had to take two back out of the box (cracked mantle mount, bad atomizer). I'm sure Coleman doesn't make them like they used to as they apparently don't stand up well in salt/humidity (unlike the older model).

Anyhow, I user underwater lights for gigging now but still carry a propane as they are packable enough to cart around as a backup.

Well that is not entirely true they can be refilled however it is not advisable.

As far as the recycling look up Earth911 enter your zipcode and specify steel, Colman makes a green key tool for cylinders so that you can ensure they are empty.

Oh, but they can. Saw a refilling rig at wally world a few years ago. It's an adapter and valve set up so you can refill 16oz. cylinders from a 20 lb (5 gallon) tank. I was interested until I saw the part where you had to turn the whole assembly upside down and hold for 5 minutes. I understand the reason why it's necessary, but I didn't like the backyard mechanic feel of the thing.

You can also build a pretty compact solar charger from an old solar garden light. A little tinkering and rigging is required, but it works. Or you could get something like a Solio charger, which is probably even lighter, and doubtless more durable.
