Arches is overrated as fuck. I don't understand why so many people visit it compared to Canyonlands.

Because the majority of people don't want to do the kind of hikes required to get to the best arches in canyonlands when most of the ones in arches np are a few hundred feet or yards from a paved parking lot.
I agree I enjoy canyonlands much more but I would not discount arches even for the more serious /out/ists. You can still get dispersed backpacking permits in some areas, and because of the nature of the landscape it is not hard to get away from people even in common day use areas.

It is true. most all of the trash and damage is to be found around parking lots and on the short frountcountry trails, where that 90% is. That's why, even though cross country travel is legal in arches, all those short trails to features all have tons of signs about staying on trail, to control that 90%

You are unfortunately wrong. Everybody gets deep into them. Even fatties.
The worst thing that ever happened to national parks, was becoming national parks. They were far better when they were just considered 2nd rate grazing land by the government and the only people who went there were cowboys and sheep headers

You can go now and see the areas outside of those southeast utah national parks, out on blm land and see the stark difference in protection. Yes there is an impact of recreation that is part of the trade-off, but it's way less than grazing was or currently is.

And remember 10% of a fuckton of visitors is still a lot of people, it can be true that most all don't go far but there is still enough left in that 10% to get out further too.

The culture changed since covid lockdowns. I visited Yellowstone pre-covid and the 200 meter rule was definitely true, but post-covid was a lot different. We saw tons of people out on the trails. The asian tour bus tourons don't leave the parking lot, but it seems like everyone else is hiking.

I went to Yellowstone in October last year and that rule still applies. Besides the walkway areas around the geysers nobody is out walking deep into the woods or hill sections. Same went for Grand Teton, almost everyone walked out to popular spots like the waterfall around Jenny Lake but the moment you went up the hill to go into the cascades you lost nearly everyone save for a handful of more fit people.

Even during summer on the east coast in parks like Shenandoah I found most of the trails to be empty the moment I go deep into them, especially past waterfalls. Dark Hollow Falls for instance, fucking easily 100 people sitting in the falls once you get down to it because it's an easy hike downhill (goodluck fatties going back up). Made it impossible to enjoy it, but the moment you descend further into the valley below you'll find yourself all alone save for maybe a few people who had the same idea that you'll pass. Eventually you'll make it to Rose River Falls and find less than a dozen people because nobody wants to go walking 2-3h, especially when the elevation gain getting back out is not going to be easy for fatties

How many Arches rangers were cut? How many were tasked with monitoring that trail? This just sounds like the NPS holding their land hostage in retaliation for budget cuts.

As of last year only ~1200 were rangers. rest are probably admin, gift shop, jannies basically
They laid off 5% of the employees in Feb, apparently nearly 3-5% additional took a buy out deal for early retirement totally like 2300 positions gone.
How many of those are rangers idk, not public but clearly you can read about rangers complaining about being laid off.

They probably cut tour shit since it eats up a lot of time for the ranger & you normally don't have to pay for the tours (beyond entrance fee). I'd imagine too this trail must have been a problematic area for people vandalizing the rocks which is probably why they closed it off to save on man power.

it was absolutely empty, and an amazing experience.
i drove on some random dirt access roads, and hiked to places no one else had probably been to

unless you were in the Maze Canyonlands wasn't "empty". compared to Arches sure, but the Island in the Sky area especially is pretty busy itself, and the Needles area is hardly off the beaten path. You can wander off and be by yourself anywhere, even in Arches. Go wander beyond the trail in Devil's Garden or even the Windows area. Lost Spring Canyon is a pretty nice area that virtually no one visits.

anyway, fiery furnace is cool, I've done it a couple times. But I like Arches for the arches so it's not my favorite part of the park, there's some ok arches in there I guess.

I feel that. I hit up every national park (plus Goblin Valley and Dead Horse Point) in Utah last fall and I didn't think Arches was anything special in terms of national parks. My rankings would go:
Zion >>> Canyonlands > Arches = Bryce Canyon > Capitol Reef
To be fair to Capitol Reef, I had not spent a single second planning out what to do there so I just went on the normie hikes near the Torrey entrance and looked at the historical stuff.

Zion was incredible. Holy shit. I can see why people would put Arches above Canyonlands, but anyone who says Arches is the best national park in Utah is out of their fucking mind.

Do you not have thicket there?
Basically as a consequence of logging, at higher elevations in exposed areas it's just endless heath and laurel bushes that take a bunch of effort to get through. Interesting, in unlogged areas, it isn't like that at all.

Yellowstone has a wide range of habitats- grasslands,forest, wetands, alpine tundra etc...but the in general, bushwacking is pretty easy depending on location. More often than not, I just follow game trails when I go off trail as the critters always know the most efficient way up or down a mnt. Sometimes you come to a blowdown that is hard to pass thru, or a marshy area with dense riparian shrubs etc...but a lot of YNP, especially in the northern part, is sage brush steppe which is a breeze to hike thru.
