Have you guys ever considered a career in conservation? It's a tempting prospect, and I don't really see a reason not to go into it. I feel like I'd enjoy the work, and I've always respected the guys who do it in one way or another--having grown up in a rural part of the Rockies.

I mean, from a Canadian perspective, anything directly with the province or national parks service. A fish and wildlife officer on average makes $80k yearly. l I knew a fellow who made good money working for the mine making sure they weren't poisoning the water supply. I'd assume it's similar in most countries.

I'm a federal forest inspector (in Germany)
it's an awesome /out/ job

made a thread on here about it like 10y ago
when I got in after my PhD (you don't need one, only bachelor of something forest related)
and advocate for it every since

you drive from forest to forest and document the health of the trees, the health of the floor and everything around
we also do tree counts every few years
most of the work is on the road (4days out 1day (home)office and every 4th week completely office)
and I specialized on "Primärwälder" (Old-growth forest) which I survey in all of Germany but mostly not as there is very little of if
so basically you drive up a few points on a certain forest a day, I get my drones out (they return automatically and fly preconfigured paths) and then I walk through the forest, take a few soil samples and photograph each interesting point

just a really cool job all around
and before you ask, I make ~80k€ (won't get much more, only small, yearly increases)

it is!
like I said, among the perfect /out/ jobs
and this job is done (more or less) in every developed country
plus it's not even hard to get in, only need to get a bachelor / master in forest science or similar (though salaries certainly are very good in Germany compared to other european countries)

depends

nowadays yes
but depends on the day
sometimes people for land survey come along
sometimes researchers from the nearby university tag along to install / repair / update measuring stations in the forests
sometime politicians and my states first ministers kek

and the jobs changes with the technology
up until ~2020 I had someone with me to fly the drones, now they fly autonomous
i think they are currently testing those 4 legged walking robots as assistance as well because the have software to spot tree health instantly, but not sure, only got told so by a researcher

so I maybe it'll be 2 persons again in the future

I went to college for an environmental degree and have worked a couple entry level positions. So far so good, idk about the long run. The only speed bump is you have to deal with a lot of hippie trust fund kids and turbo boomer government employees.

My uncle is both and has one of these jobs. Keeping it is about being incredibly knowledgeable on the topics but getting it is about being socially connected. You can’t do it without both advantages

These jobs are mostly fake.
There is no genuine entry, training or selection process, the only way to get in is to be a crony or relative of someone who's already in.
There's no tangible deliverable, you're an ideologist. your objective is ideological, it's a political position. While a conversationalist may carry out any practical task they chose, rarely do they have any deliverables. The measure of their success is just feelings.
There is no genuine competition, it's not an industry, there is rarely open tendering or for-profit clients, or any profit. And rather than being non-for-profit, this just makes them a compliance cartel.

And how true this is only becomes apparent when you realize non of it applies to forestry managers, glaziers, parks authorities, commercial tree planters, land management specialists.

In my region these are just corrupt, state funded lobby groups who commit acts of vandalism, attack the rights of land users, light fires, and undermine public confidence in commercial forestry. they are the far left, the extortionists.

on the selection process you’re right but the deliverable depends on the region and country a lot. Many countries and states have some imperfect but defined KPIs focused towards some goal, be it recreation of wild space or eco preservation, etc. and in many places these make progress
You can’t say it’s all doom and gloom just because it is in your state.

If you’re in the US good luck. All the agencies have had their budgets slashed on the federal side and a bunch of highly qualified people are currently job hunting. My agency is one of the only places hiring and we got 50 resumes for a handful of jobs, with some people willing to take a huge pay cut just to have work. It was hard and competitive before and it’s only got worse.

Yeah its cool for awhile. But if you want to actually do something and not be an office bitch they won't pay you shit. The only really highly paid conservationists are really just excellent salesmen that author and present grant applications to federal and state agencies for additional funding that augments the local capital budget. The if you get awarded the grant, congratulations you now get to submit progress reports every month for the next 5 years and hire consultants to do the analysis and design. Then some political retard does something that makes the costs of steel and concrete double and your budget projections get fucked so you go get another grant which you're more likely to get because you leverage the already committed funds from other agencies. So you got another award and you're back on track but now you're reporting to different agencies every month and have to keep track of every penny from each grant and which portions of the project it's funding. That's just the funding piece, when you include permits, aquisitions, contracting, and inter-agency agreements it turns into a real fucknest of gantt charts and timeline extensions.

Usually work in the development side of things, mapping shit out or helping some corpo sleazeball exploit natural resources. Cool stuff, but if youre a preservationist, conservationist, or otherwise treehuggerish you will get the sensation of selling your soul and razing the planet for money, becoming what you swore to upend. But you CAN make a lot of money.

Usually an -ologist type job where you DO actually make a difference AND a living, but you do it behind a desk indoors while the lowly techs do all the hard outdoor stuff for 12 shmackaroos an hour. Also, these jobs are very competitive and you have to go up against early-20s kiddies going for a Master's degree while living with mom and pop so they had opportunities to volunteer and intern and network. Geologists seem to be the happiest and most well-balanced bunch from this region.

>outside/fulfilling
These are the techs and field hands that go out an actually execute the things -ologists and state/federal programs have planned out. Good for single guys and gals in their younger years and not too many bills, but a dead end for anyone with a family or medical debt. Can be a good leg up if you want to go the -ologist route, though. The entirety of federal land management groundpounding (fire/forestry/fish&feather) exists at this level.
