/out/ give me recs on leather boots that are stylish yet practical. Preferably waterproof. Been thinking about the danner light 2, but I wanna know whats out there.

it's best to go to your local outdoors shop and talk to an expert. different use cases may require different kinds of boots. but most importantly, the shoe needs to properly fit so you don't get blisters or injuries after walking in them the whole day.

not all outdoor shops have staff with expertise, but if they do, they are well worth it even if the shoes end up being a bit more expensive than you originally planned.

if you are looking for stylish shoes, just look for gorpcore shit, so you can wear your fancy outdoor gear in the city.

What are some good half-boot trail runner type shoes? I need to be able to chase people down but then not worry about my shoes coming off once I’ve caught them. Normally it would be a patrol type boot but at my job I’ve got free range to wear whatever the fuck I want.
I’m in the cold now but when I get sent home it will be much warmer

most of the trailrunner brands make ones with more ankle support that look more bootlike, and are basically light boots, but I dont understand the problem, why would your trailrunners not come off when running but come off when stopped? They should be tight either way

Epic militaria has 2 great anoraks. I have the 3/4 zip. Super comfy. There is a fall oakleaf reversible parka on Nestof that is nice as well.

go with m77 if you want a basic combat boot. I like the Estonian models since Alfa (the og norwegian brand) is now made in Romania. It's also not as wide.
Zamberland makes the best designed boots. Some can be a bit narrow so I look for wider models. They excel at designs that minimize stitching (one piece of leather for less water leakage.)
As I get older though I look for boots/shoes that weigh less ideally less than 3 pounds per pair. Danner's are way too heavy. If i'm wearing something that heavy outdoors im switching to rubber boots cause its wet and mucky.

William Lennon boots, cheap for leather boots and hand made in Europe to your measurements if you get a custom order which is not as expensive as you'd think.

I've had mine 4 years now. My Lowa GTXs lasted me 2 before the soles wore flat and they cracked through.

One can never hoard enough theoretical information as a quick feel-good in order to delay as much as possible putting any of it in practice. You can't just go to Decathlon, try on boots from the cheapest up until walking back and forth the aisle feels good and get it over with. You have to get the "right" boots. Same for all else, from gear to underwear.

Retail employees are usually disinterested teens or lifelong wagies who don't have the disposal income to buy the shit they're selling.

I use Baffin Truro as my main shoes for around 6 years, had them since 2018. Had to reglue the soles recently, and I wish I took better care of them since they're pretty scratched up. But they'll still give me another 8 years. Currently using them while in Finland.

They're great in snow, and in summer they're not bad at all w/ good grip. They're less water proof now, but can probably fix with some sort of sealant.

Probably the best quality boots I've owned so far. Its leather lined and has no synthetic water proof membrane, but its keeped me dry throughout this winter and during the snow melt. Leather is an aniline which makes it more water repellent, easy to clean and also means less maintenance (you don't need to apply wax as often). Compared to my leather goretex boots it also doesn't run very hot and I could probably continue to wear it throughout much of the summer comfortably. Not something I ever considered with any of my a synthetic membrane boots. Runs a bit small so size up by atleast half an EU size. Also expect a considerable break in time. Took about half a month of daily walks until they got comfy. They now feel like an extenstion of my foot. Sole it stiff too, but that can be a good thing over the long term and certain terrain. They are also resolable. All around, highly recommend for wet and cold climate. The gore tex version of this boot is called Bergell I believe and is otherwise identical.

The Danner Light 2 is a sick pair of boots. I just got a pair of them, as well as the taller version, both for free, they're fucking fantastic, and they aren't as stiff as my Danner work boots.

M77 or nothing! I bought mine 6 years ago for 90 bucks and they only recently got worn enough that they leak, so that's a good lifetime for a pretty cheap pair of boots! They are 119eur now so still very budget friendly i'd say. They were good for military and i have went everywhere from swamps to mountains in em. Also they're fairly waterproof, but need a bit of maintenance to keep it that way but nothing too tedious. Also they look quite nice in most settings outside of the woods too, highly recommend! What do you mean? Non rigid on what part of the shoe? Non rigid leather sounds like cheap leather to me. If its rigid at the start that's a good thing, it will conform and break in over time. If its soft and flexible out to box it probably won't last too long. Same goes for the midsole foam, shank or sole (for the most part).

My heavy ass decathlon leather hiking boots gave out so I was looking into this as well. Might get a la sportiva raptor 3 mid, but I worry with goretex it's too warm for summer. I was checking out a scarpa rush 2 mid too.

We used to ride horses everywhere. Separate heels allow you to lock against a stirrup. This specific use case worked its way into fashion as horse ownership became more ubiquitous. Prior to that, everyone wore sandals.

There are options now, but people still chose the raised heel. Why? For the same reason raised heels still exist: tradition. Form over function. “It’s just always been that way”/“it’s what I’ve always used.”

Limmer, unlike the Meindl and Hanwags come in 3 different widths (except the ultralights)

People intrinsically understand that wide, non heeled footwear is more comfortable. Look at any house slipper or ultra casual loafer. They just have a mental block on applying that logic to any other footwear. Although I think most of it is people misunderstanding the function in modern footwear all comes from sole design and materials. They're mistaking the form for the function.
