So I'm wondering something about Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. Are you able to freely go through it, or can you only go in on guided tours? I've been to other caves and lava tubes that are significantly smaller, but they do let you just come and go as you please.

Kentuckian here. Just call Mammoth Cave State Park and ask if they have unguided tours.

Went there last year. Only access was with a ranger. My kid found a decent knife, though. Stuck on a walkway on one of the tours that doesn't begin at the entrance next to the park headquarters.

Been plenty of times and pretty sure they don't let people fly solo in there. You might be able to set something up through the National Speleological Society though, or get really buddy buddy with a ranger. That would probably be your best bet. Or you could take the wild cave tour– that shit is tight, and the last few hours are very freeform. Alternately you could just dip out on one of the regular walking tours (like when they get everybody to turn their lights off) and strike out to find that secret Indian mummy yourself.
