axes, hatchets, hawks, 'chetes, and stupidly large knives welcome.

starting off with a question: I'm in the market for a large hatchet/small axe. What would you recommend to me and why is it Husqvarna?

Just because it's hand forged, doesn't mean it's automatically good. I could forge you an axe right now, and I assure you it wouldn't be as good as a GB.

I really like carpenter's axes because they seem like a good balance between carving and chopping. My only problem is the profile of the edge. When it's straight like that it's really tough to get good penetration into wood of a decent diameter.

The first hits are alright and you can make decent size chips, but eventually the actual wood you're making contact with is more or less flat. When the contact area between the bit and wood is maximized like that even a mirror edge can be a pain to work with.

I know what you mean. If you're doing any sort of felling or chopping large logs in half it probably isn't the best choice, but it can go through three/four inch stuff pretty easily

Yes, thats maybe the reason why hultafors is the oldest axe maker in all Sweden.
I got the same carpenters axe like >>450563 and I payed 34€ for it. It has a perfect aligned and grained hickory handle and came dry shaving sharp. No idea why you guys love to overpay so much.

No, friend, no it isn't.

From type heritage, a Western machete is a fundamentally corrupted bill hook. Eastern hacking knives are related to the general Eastern hacking blade heritage.

From first use, a billhook predates the machete, and therefore cannot be of its type.

Also from type descriptors, billhooks aren't machetes, as billhooks are hacking hand axes, whereas machetes are hacking knives.

i have a husqvarna hatchet that i got for forty bucks and it's very nice, i would recommend that because you won't need anything else. you probably don't even need the hatchet but if you've got to be a faggot and own an axe it might as well be the most affordable good one you can find. alternatively you can go to antique stores and find an old axe head and make a new handle for it, refab it

I saw a Hultafors with a split wedge and completely off grain. If you can pick your own, sure, but a big part is KNOWING you will get a good one.

I haven't used one but I have held one, calling it a trail hawk on steroids is an understatement, it is pretty heavy and I have now doubt it would chop well

It's a little heavy for throwing but it would hit like a brick and if you put a long handle on it you would have a powerful chopper

With that said, Husqvarna makes a good hand forged axe for half the price of even the GB. Whether it has the durability and reliable steel as the other two I wouldn't know.

Yes. I was just saying if you could get a GB for cheaper I would go with them, because of how established their quality control is.

Wetterlings is suppose to have very good steel as well, I personally do not own one, but their quality is probably just as well as GB.

Sweden may be committing cultural suicide, but boy do they sure know how to forge quality steel tools.
