They eat a lot of pesky bugs like ticks and mosquitos, they spread seeds to help propagate trees and smaller plants, and of course they're beautiful to look at and listen to.

Also woodpeckers eat bugs that kill trees and other animals use their holes after they leave.
Birds of prey do population control on animals like mice and shit
Jays do like squirrels, hide piles of nuts for in the winter in different locations, when they forget a place trees grow
etc. etc.

for me, if birds are around its a good sign; water nearby(ish), but if there are none it mean the area might be rather barren of resources and there might be a predator around

So I guess they are important, but most of them are also kind of lame.

Except for raptors who are pretty cool, the bird kind of raptor, not the dead dino raptor.
