Back then you had no proper rechargeable batteries so 8 new AA's after 20-30 rolls became old really fast. It was expensive to shoot the F5, hence the massive price drop in resale.
It's new enough that you can still find old forum posts from people complain about it.
Nowadays with Eneloops it's no longer a problem. Who's shooting 30 rolls in succesion today?
Get one, they are fun, and a solid exercise for your wrist.
