If there is one thing I have learned about advertising it is that you ONLY ever advertise in a WEDDING SPECIFIC FORUM. Anything not specifically about weddings is a waste of time, for example Yell, any discount directory, any special wedding feature in the local paper or magazine. People do not pick up these things when looking for a wedding photographer. Also any form of print media apart from business cards is useless.
Even a lot of wedding forums are over subscribed. I spent a lot on UK Bride but there were so many other photographers on there it was impossible to stand out. I only just broke even on that.
By far the best marketing money I have spent is on Facebook Ads. You can target people who are newly engaged within 50 miles of your front door. As my prices have increased the return has dropped but in the sub £1000 wedding photography market I was making £900 for every £100 spent.
I spend about £500 a month on FB adds, screen grab shows the costs of my current campaign.
