They're great for learning the history of the medium and as a reference tool. They can be decent for introducing fundamentals to the art and technique of photography but most books on those subjects are rather generic and poor.
PHOTOGRAPHY The Definitive Visual History is a decent introductory survey into the history of photography. It skips a few things which I think should included, particularly in nascent photography technology, but no book is perfect. Unlike most photo history books it has the balls to go past the 60s and runs right up in the early 2000s.
