Why are there next to no cameras that capture the full circular image, instead of the cropped rectangle?

Think it through.

“Why don’t they use the whole projected image on 35mm”: because they’d need larger film to do that, like 120. So now you don’t have “35mm but using the whole image circle”, you have “medium format, but it doesn’t fill the whole frame”. Since paper and film both come in rectangles instead of discs, you’re wasting a lot of film and a lot of paper just to get the shitty edges of your lens’s ability to project. Nobody wants that.

Scale that up and it’s the same argument, although you probably COULD mount a medium format lens on a 4x5, which just goes to show no one wants to.

Film is cheap for a roll. Film is not cheap for the lifetime of film run under a given lens. Spend a little extra money up front to make the lens cover the whole rectangle fully and sharply, or spend a lot of extra money wasting film over the life of your camera?

Get a mirrorless camera and adapt a smaller-format lens to it. There's your circular image. Play around with it and lose interest after 5 minutes, because it's a stupid idea.

Because instead of buying a 35mm camera, you're buying a medium format camera and cropping down to a circle. If you want to do that, just do it in post and have a medium format camera to use normally. This is literally the same question as asking why they don't make DVDs into squares so they can store more data.

Also note that the image circle is not of defined size. Lens designers just aim to make it larger than the format (they don't always succeed). Image circle can even change size as a lens zooms or focuses.

It provides no benefit, and would be more expensive to produce and use. That doesn't explain why there aren't cameras like this?

It's like asking "Why are there no cameras designed to immediately unspool the roll of film onto the ground when you turn it on". Because that's dumb and why are you even asking it?

It's a fair argument, but I find it more compelling that nobody is doing round photographs. It's perfecty reasonable aspect ratio, and it offers a ton of creative options that are impossible on squares.

Then why are there sensors with different ratios? This would not be a problem if there all of the image was captured.
Even if you want a rectangular picture, you can still crop it from the round picture taken.

Again, if you think of it not as “capturing the whole image circle” but as “wasting the edges of the film”, it makes perfect sense why they don’t do it. If you’re capturing a circular image in 135, the biggest square you’re gonna get is smaller than if you’re capturing a normal rectangle on 135. If you’re capturing a circle on 120, the biggest square you’re gonna get is smaller than if you’re capturing a normal rectangle on 120. So what’s the point?

You keep thinking of it has the film or sensor not capturing the whole circle, but really all you're trying to do is use a lens for a smaller format. You can literally already buy a full frame camera and a crop lens to get photos like pic related. Then you can just crop of the photos instead of cutting down sensors.

If you crop off the vignetting you get a square image. The distortion looks a little weird to me, I don't know what to do about that.

Do you think there's anything in there worth exploring? I can't think of any benefits to getting more of that image circle, but I'm open to ideas.

Yeah pretty much.
In fact the portions outside of the defined crop are not usually pretty. In essence you would be cropping close to what the camera was doing in the first place as has been noted.
