I took this last summer with my Honor View 10 Lite
I took 7 pics and stacked them on GIMP to reduce the noise
I admit it looks pretty low quality but I was surprised it was capable of this
exposure time was 8 seconds and iso 3200

not to discourage you or anything, but why? if you already have a tracker and telescope, why not get a mount and a cheap dslr like a 5D if you dont already have one?

am I understanding incorrectly then or did you somehow take 292 shots at 2 seconds long and also accurately align the telescope every 5-10 seconds?

No. I aligned the telescope every 5-10 seconds only roughly. The fine alignment was done by the stacking software.

OK, lets say someone is just starting out and has no equipment to observe with. What should be the first thing you (as an experienced observer)would suggest to get, to get the raw beginner started?

Yes, some people install wheels and wheelbarrow handles on them, build rolling platforms for them to sit on, etc. Do a search for "wheels" in the reflectors forum and you will see some pics about this.

I'm just starting out too, it really depends what you mean by observe. Do you want to look with your eyes or do you want to take pictures?
I want to do pictures, and so far from my research, a 135mm lens on a aps-c camera bolted to a automatic tracker are all you need for learning how to take some amazing shots.

Rest your phone on a book or a stone so it points to the sky. Take a couple of photos with the same long exposure. Then stack them with Sequator.

Buy binoculars or a cheap travel scope. Check if you're getting into it and if it's worth putting more money on the table.

That's a pretty amazing pic considering how bad cellphone cameras are for this kind of stuff, here's my own attempt. I used 5x25s lights, 5 darks, took them with a Canon T6 on a 150/1500 Schmidt–Cassegrain telescope.

I started with a pair of binoculars, which are prety helpful for finding the positions of diferent stars, nebulas, and other faint objets. They also give you an idea of what are you going to see through the telescope.

But are they really so bad? The worst part for me is centering the phone with the eyeipece in XYZ axies. But that might be the fault of the adapter. As to the difference in quality of the picture, I find the upgrade to a DSLR the least useful comparing bang to the buck. So I'd rather buy a better mount or telescope.

Thanks. It's actually the lack of tracking which is the bottleneck there.

Well the biggest disadventage of using a cellphone camera is that the cuantity of ligh that gets to your sensor is greatly reduced by the eyepiece, especially on the edges. I know that my pictures aren't the best examples of quality DSLR pics since im new to this kind of stuff, but i would recommend the upgrade if you want better details. You can search for cheap/quality gear on different astroforums.

One of these days maybe. I find DSLR interface a great pain in the ass while doing astro. Neither DSLR nor handheld were made for this purpose. Maybe a dedicated cam would be a better option... For now I'm taking my gear on bike trips so I'd rather keep it as light as possible.

Well there's other disadvantages like the size of the optics within the phone camera, and the sensor size, both combined will physically limit the amount of detail you can get because the photons simply cant all fit through the optics and onto the sensor. The other issue is the layer that makes the DSLR a colour camera will limit the amount of pixels exposed, so you are getting about a quarter the detail you could. obviously dedi astro cameras solve this but you're swapping filters all the time at that point.
You can actually scrape the colour layer off of a DSLR sensor and make it the same if not better than most astro cams, but I'm not sure how it would work. Better buy a very cheap camera if you try it.

Yes. Do that directly after taking lights so that you have the same conditions (mainly temperature).

Try less ISO or different stacking algorithm so that you do not burn the nebula.

spotlighting for owls in the scrub on a full moon, pixel 3a via nightsight. really surprised with some of the exposures this thing gets in low light. they aren't technically impressive if you have any movement in the scene, but you do still get some nice vibrant dreamy blurry pics
