I would say in the case of rural atmosphere it's cold temperatures, lack of visible horizon, lush vegetation, wooden structures with considerable overhangs and extended beams along with very prominent walled structures, sometimes water as an important element and changes of elevations.
In theory you could pull such photography in the nordic countries because they have similar places but i haven't seen it consistently.
But then there's the islander/okinawan aesthetic which is different.
