Mirrorless is much better than DSLR for a beginner as the viewfinder will show you how your exposure will change as you adjust settings.
Sony is a great brand to go for as they have cameras and lenses at all budgets, so the system can grow with you. You will want to go full frame if you stick with photography.
You will see people on here try to push m43 cameras and Fuji cameras, they are objectively bad choices to buy into for a first system and they are just trying to drag others down to their level.
Sony have gone from being one of the smallest camera makers, to the biggest in the last 10 years, they have an almost complete monopoly on sensor production, everyone but canon relies on them, and many also rely on Sony for screens, both at the back and in the viewfinder. If you're buying fuji\nikon\pentax\etc, you're basically just buying Sony parts at a premium price and bodged together. Sony have by far the best battery performance of any mirrorless as they are in control of every aspect of their cameras, they and canon are really the only 2 camera companies left.
