Anyway, I'm shooting more B&W than color these days. It's not that I've given up on color, but a large amount of my fun comes when I am actually taking the photos, and B&W fulfills that nicely. Plus, developing at home is fun and inexpensive. I currently use Rodinal. All my stuff is dirt cheap.

And I try to stock up on film when I can get a good deal. At the pharmacy they had Superia 400 sitting around for a while and over time with coupons I bought everything they had. So now I have a dozen rolls in the freezer and I got them way below market price.

For 35mm I use Kodak ColorPlus. It unironically has really nice yellows and greens, I love the looks. It's also the only film I can actually buy where I live. Not the only one I can afford, I mean literally the only one I can find. A 36 exp roll costs around $7. Pic related is shot on ColorPlus. Don't buy into the "but it's only for the average consumer who doesn't even care" marketing it is often associated with.

This is actually what prompted Adox to release rolls of Color Mission from a big master roll they had. They said they were waiting until they could get enough money for what they had, and that happened. Of course, that sold out instantly too, but they said they're using it as a funding source to see if they can actually put a color film into production for the long term. The stuff they're selling now is from a one off coating run and whoever did it for them is now defunct.

Also they said they're releasing a low speed color film in July. Only 3 color layers so it's a lot simpler and should sell for a much lower price.

Go to YouTube, google Kodak factory tour. NOBODY is going to be making cheap film. You need massive machines and it’s crazy levels of complex. It only got cheap from massive economies of scale once giant factories are pumping out huge volume. The sad reality is it will just keep getting more expensive as demand drops and the lower the volume, the more expensive those 100s of machines required to make a roll of film become.

Get over it. Film was cheap when it was the standard. Nowadays it is directed towards a smaller crowd that specifically want that and therefore is ready to pay in order to account for production prices of smaller batches. In 2022 digital is the cheap standard.

I just bought a digital camera. Even considering film OEMs current rates of investment on renewed manufacturing processes, the retail price isn't going to decrease from its current price by more than 10-20%. Calculating against inflation and median household income, film prices are similar to when they were from the 1970s-1990s. The combination of low 2000s prices and current high-priced eBay resellers just makes the situation appear worse than it is. Now that the prices have gone back to normal (when buying from a retailer), you can see why people switched to digital in the first place.
