It doesn't, because you won't keep it super long. You'll use it to learn the exposure triangle and learn what you don't like about it and use that information to buy something else. Just don't spend a ton of money because you'll likely want to buy something else in 6 months anyway. Just pick something and start

The things that actually determine how well you get along with a camera you can't possibly know because you haven't used a camera before. Things like; what focal lengths do you like to shoot? How big of a grip do you like? How often do you shoot off the lcd vs the viewfinder? How often do you use a tripod? How much does weight/size matter? How often are you shooting in bad/low light? How important is stabilization? What subjects do you shoot and at what distances?

The problem with recommending a first camera to someone is that these are the things that actually determine if a camera is a good fit for you but you cannot possibly know any of these things without first using cameras for awhile. The specs are not only less important than ever, but if you've never used anything except a phone before will you really notice the technical differences between a camera with 2 more stops of stabilization and dynamic range? I doubt it. You might be able to make some guesses about the questions above, but until you start doing it you won't actually know. Because even once you start your tastes ebb and change over time and your gear will likely evolve with those changing tastes.

Maybe he could get a decent compact with manual controls that is in the 12MP range. If he is okay with an inexpensive compact that is great. If he eventually wants more the compact will still have utility as a pocket camera when the big camera would be too cumbersome.

It's not about what you in particular plan on doing with a camera (walking around taking pictures of everything), it's about what whoever is buying a camera is planning on doing with a camera, and avoiding the stupidity of buying what the internet says to when they are clearly dead set on whoever listens to them upgrading later. Maybe you would want to upgrade later if /p/ talked you into buying a canon 5DS. Maybe someone is the opposite of you.

my point is people should not plan to upgrade, actually think about their purchases before making them, and save money if necessary to get a keeper and avoid losing money on hoarding unused gear or ebay selling fees. most people who bought cameras before internet hobbyist culture (aka consoomerism) actually did this. they're the ones who still have their first and only camera. be more like them.

Most professionals do not even need that. They're in the stratosphere for a reason. When you're looking at five figure pricetags, it's most likely gear that employers buy the photographers on their payroll to guarantee they get their shots, or gear that's so rarely used most of the people buying it are rental agencies (this is where things like 1000w strobes live).

On the other hand it would be pretty reasonable to, after some thought, settle on using a nikon D500 and 300m f4 PF or 200-500 zoom for wildlife photography. Or a Z5II and 180-600 if you were wealthier.

Get a good all rounder that you'll want to bring with you. It should also have manual controls so you can learn how to properly use a camera. Once you have the desire to specialize you can get a different tool for that job. This isn't a video game, gamer bro.

To be fair most of my 12 cameras were bought out of curiosity/boredom and were functionally identical. Not because I couldn't take a DSLR to a bar. Because I had a canon, and wanted to see if sony was that good, or wanted to try nikon ergonomics, and wanted to check out fuji, and was selling them for +/-200 off the purchase price. It didn't matter if they weren't perfect for me. It's a money shuffling time killer for rich people.

The more independent someone can be from internet hobbyist culture the better. Leave swapping gear to the same people who lease new cars, people who enjoy trying new luxury goods, instead of framing it as a need or the logical progression (buy a mini cooper before you decide if you need a BMW 5 series?)
Even stretch the car analogy further, 1-2 day gear rentals can be cheap and there are still stores that let you try cameras before buying something.

You can continue projecting your muscular deficiencies, but it would be a better use of time to hit the gym instead of trying to recruit people into a weird small sensor compact cult based on the made up necessity of bringing unobtrusive cameras to social events and imaginary weight limits for hiking. You keep saying don't buy specialized, but compacts ARE specialized. They have worse IQ and less versatility to keep size down. It's not the most holy starting point and they often cost more than superior large sensor ILCs.

You may want to try using your camera to scan the film. Sheet film works well enough for flatbed scanners, but you can get better-ish results with a decent camera for mf and under.

The lenses are know to vary in quality, not between examples moreso between models. The nFD 50 1.4 for example is a really nice, sharp lens, however there are plenty of FD lenses that are not so good. I would say the F1n is best camera in the lineup if you want a durable brick. Best spec-wise is the T90, but they get this EEE error if you don't use them. It's an easy fix, you just stick a little magnet into a certain spot when you take the from fascia off. Since Canon wasn't really the 'professional's choice' until the EOS-1 came out, their FD L series lenses didn't sell in huge number, and as such they're pretty expensive now. They are definitely good, most are better than their Nikon equivalents, but they're also way more expensive than the Nikon ones. That's all I can think of of the top of my head.

The camera body doesn't matter so much, as you pick one that has the features you want until a better one rolls around. Get a refurbished r10 until you figure out what you'll be shooting long term. It has excellent AF and a lot of the features you'd see on a higher level so you can practice.

It's something you just have to do. Tell your nervous self to shut up and just press the button. Soon enough you won't be embarassed or anxious anymore. If you are truly a lazy asshole just walk around the block with your camera at first and build up to further/longer outings from there.
Another nice thing to do is figure out a lunch spot or nice bar and you mozy along towards your destination taking pics, have lunch and a beer, then continue snapping while walking back home or whatever.

The key lies in starting with something you will never feel like you've "outgrown". Because then you end up wasting time and money when you upgrade. So, start with full-frame and good lenses.
If your budget is average, just buy a Nikon Z5ii (or at a discount in 6 months) and one compact lens to keep the whole thing portable and encourage you to use it (perhaps a native Voigtlander to force you to learn manual focusing and using primes too). To be clear, I'm not culling a lot on camera, just throwaways that were either accidents are cleary very shit. I do it in the name of organisation; less to go through later. I sift through everything at home to see what to keep and what to toss immediately, but everything gets looked over because I'm not taking mental notes and I dont have a camera with a rating button, so if something is dog shit, getting rid of it asap in camera is just one less thing to do later.
Now, I'm not going to argue that it might be bad for the card itself, but I see the possibility of a dead card as an acceptable loss.
If I were sorting things into many folders, or rating things in-camera, I would have no reason to delete in-camera. But that sounds like way more work and concentration out in the field that I'd rather put into the photos.

You can shoot raw on phones, and pro DSLRs have automatic post processing that destroys detail and color harder than capture one for example, so it's not even unusual. Noise reduction was just worthless then so they barely used it by default.

Those are inherently hard to do, since depth of field increase eventually limits your image quality due to diffraction. You can keep stopping down to your minimum aperture but don't be surprised when you start seeing the images become blurry. You can compensate with stacking focus in post processing if you want.
I recently made a 4x5 pinhole for this exact reason since their depth of field is essentially infinite, but image quality suffers there due to the resolution limit of pinholes.

Hello everyone. So, what would be the best way to rename files copied from my SD card? I've just been copying my RAW files from my SD card into a folder, and then importing into Lightroom classic. I've hit the magical 9999 photo on my Canon camera so the filenames are starting anew at 0001. Because their autofocus is lightyears ahead of fujfilm, canon refuses to make a cheap camera with competitive dynamic range, nikon keeps excluding IBIS from DX models, and hobbyists are actually okay with poorly made bricks and needing special lightroom presets for any photo with skin tones in it, so they don't have to spend money on R&D for anything else.

There's a reason most autofocus demos on youtube for fuji/panasonic are video only (lower res makes minor focus misses invisible) and talk about how well the subject tracking box sticks instead of the speed, accuracy, and hunting frequency. Even the xm5 isn't very good yet. It's hard to take a picture of something as basic as a cat chasing a toy - compared to a DSLR from 2013 that would do a pretty good job if you were willing to lay prone.

fuji autofocus was worse than early nikon mirrorless until the xm5, now its just as bad, and people who spent 2k on xt5/xh2 bodies are stuck patiently waiting for fuji to bring those improvements back after actually downgrading their attempt at 3d tracking. even single point frequently misses or just isn't fast enough to keep up with something as literally pedestrian as people walking unless you're the type to shoot 40 photos and delete 30.

if fuji just fixed this sony would lose half their market share overnight because sony cameras are garbage in literally every other way.

That is exactly what I do. Doesn't everyone do this? that 1/10 of a second between shots might have the expression that makes the photo. Especially once they notice the camera the expression usually goes to disdain. Just hold that button down and let the shutter fly. I have lots of archive of peoples faces going from happy to, oh, it's him again. I never delete though, I got burnt too many times finding out I could have saved it somehow by doing this one simple trick.

Eh, sony sensors are the best. That's why they're in most of the high end cameras. It's just a difference in software sharpening, and color correcting that the cameras do by themselves that makes people think it is different somehow. I forget which, but I remember looking it up and Hasselblad having the same sensor as a Nikon, which was the same as Sony.... you get the idea. Different brand, same sony insides, and obviously, sony version works slightly better, considering they designed and made it.

If you only intend to make 4x5 prints or view the pictures on a screen it is just okay. Diffraction really screws the pictures up.

You can get way better caneras for the same price or cheaper.

"3d pop" also known as "tonality" is real too, it's also called a lack of glare and superb color transmission, but everyone gets it wrong and blames element counts and types because early sigma arts and canikon pro lenses had lots of elements made of glass that isn't nearly as good as what we have today and was like shooting through a green window. You can find this out yourself. The lumix 20mm f1.7 I is very flat especially at wide apertures. The lumix 20mm f1.7 II has "pop" and has pretty good color - by mft standards. All that changed was the glass and coatings. The optical formula stayed the same.

I use Bulk Rename Utility on windows. It looks super complicated but its pretty quick n easy to use.

You don't need to bother with renaming, you shouldn't be copying to a folder then importing that folder
Let lightroom handle the import for you and it can make it's own folders, you took an unnecessary step and made an unnecessary issue from it
Once in lightroom, you can just rename as needed when exporting

Camera color science is a fact, it's not presets or jpegs. It's the first thing you learn when you process raws and have two cameras at the same time if you didn't already figure out the obvious (lenses filter and diffuse color, camera CFAs all let different wavelengths through, AA filters increase pixel crosstalk and mess with colors because the actual color is guessed from adjacent pixels, etc

while the statistical deviations after calibrating cameras with an xrite CC24 target and software like lumariver or whatever davinci resolve does are small there is still a visible differences especially in brighter hues like reds and caucasian skin tones because the human eye is more sensitive to color differences than charts can effectively communicate. increasing the swatch count does not make a dramatic visible difference.

different cameras will always be different therefore people will argue about which camera is best
this was less of a big deal with film because every camera could accept almost every lens and sensors were interchangeable, but with digital, bad design decisions from snoy especially will always be contentious because people pay $2000 to be stuck with them forever

Snoys just require inordinate effort to fix colors because the mount is too small, the sensor glass is too thick, and their lens coatings are too neutral and something in the pipeline destroys luminance variations in beiges. A lot of data is lost or mixed up before the sensor even shits out the numbers - and sony post-processes that inf before it even becomes a raw file. Can't turn off hot pixel reduction on sony, vignetting correction whacks raw files on sony. It sucks.

Sensor wise for sure. Build quality, not a chance. I would rather learn on a body that I can bang around a bit. When you develop proper technique and upgrade to a bag (or carry system ala black rapid) then upgrade. Same goes for lenses. Get second hand metal lenses from KEH or Adorama before hopping on Amazon.

All of them? I shoot every day and use my cameras to failure. Best built cameras I ever used were d200 and d700. Honorable mention for d850.

lumix, multiple sony rx100, nikon d7000 and d7200, and a d600 all failed.

I have had 3 (old school) bodies over 500k shutter.

For example when someone is carrying a moire bomb or there's a source of incredibly fine repeating patterns in your shot?

Pixel shift solves it but isn't usable for most shots, higher megapixels seems to be the way to go but I can only afford so many and I assume that just reduces the number of subjects that appear artifacted but doesn't eliminate them.

Yeah I'm aware it's a digital thing, caused by bayer. Also created in post so a ML moire reduction thing might actually not be cringe. Different demosaicing methods produce different moire so it is what it is.

Seems a bit too hopeful to run reduction effects but for reference something like this is what I'm referring to.

This kind of material woven in this way with like a perfect grid of pure black with highlights from the lighting really bug out the demosaicing and often create colors over chunks of the bits in focus, when out of focus it's fine, but considering these types of bags are usually 3D objects and places at an angle in the background they wind up with parts in focus sometimes and always glitch out.

I'm at the point when I see things now and I take the time if I can to physically remove them from the scene before taking the shot.

I'm sure a B&W sensor wouldn't have this issue but bayer behind sharp glass definitely does.
