Last superzoom compact camera models came out before COVID. Is there really no market anymore for these? Smartphones still cannot match that 720mm eq. tele end

Phone companies are trying to squeeze every last bit of potential out of their cameras while keeping them flat, thin, very light and performing a ton of other functions.

Just imagine if camera manufacturers actually tried to match the current flagship camera-focused smartphones in terms of software. They could put an array of multiple sensors for different focal lengths and make the sensors bigger in the process.

They could even make the cameras wider or slightly heavier in the process and it wouldn't matter as long as they still fit in every male pocket

Brought one of those Sonys with me to Europe the last 2 summers. Not a single art worthy photo, but great keepsake photos. Reveals details in architecture, captures scenes while driving that would look like literally nothing from a cell phone.

When paired with the bluetooth tripod it can take very watchable video. Using the viewfinder and bracing against your cheek it is reasonably stable. Zoomed in on a helicopter disappearing into a cloud high in the alps. Compressed shot of ships in Istanbul harbor framed by buildings. Panned across the buildings of Athens from the Acropolis.

Time lapse while on tripod easy and discrete.

It disappears into a sling bag and is with you at all times. Travel photos are important for preserving memories. The compact superzoom was a home run for that, beats the shit out of phone pics.

People here act snobbish about zoom, you see the prime dictatorship insist upon itself too much but when it comes down to it, if you have to pick one to rely on a zoom is always better than a prime. Primes have their appeal but there's no comparison to a proper zoom. And I say this as someone who usually packs a 28-135mm for photography on the move (85-205mm too sometimes).

It's been a long time since I've debated the merits of prime vs zoom... people were singing the praises of the 24-70 2.8 G when I got mine back in the day. Some were saying it's getting into prime territory in some aspects. When they eventually updated it the consensus seemed to be that the new one is in fact superior to its predecessor. I didn't read about the specifics of what the IQ improvements are though. The fact that I didn't totally geek out about it indicates that my mentality has changed. I used to read obsessively about new gear. Until I find out there's been a sea change in camera tech I probably won't upgrade.

I did bring an a7iii with a Zeiss 35mm 2.8 prime. Main consideration being the physical size of the whole package.

Optical quality wise first party 24-70/2.8 zooms are absolutely prime tier. And how often do you feel f/2.8 isn't enough?
24mm is a length I cover with a prime but it's precisely because of its flaws that I picked it. I like the Biotar flare.

DSLR business-class glass. Extreme value. f/2.8 or f/4 zooms are literally your best purchase. They have "prime-like" (a dumb fucking statement but w/e) lens quality but you aren't kneecapping yourself by only having one focal length available. Primes are primarilly a method of weight & bulk savings nowadays, and that's only if you avoid the beeg f1.4/1.2 primes.

I'm getting the impression that threads turn into gear discussion too often and pics would be appreciated.

Obviously this camera's strength is the long lens and not necessarily the image quality. Still better IQ than a cell phone by a large margin.

I have used my 24-70 G for the last 8 years and it keeps churning out good photos. I'm sticking with - ignorance is bliss - on how much better the updated model is.

I rented a 135 f/1.8 G and it was amazing. The separation of the subject from the background and the dreamy bokeh just can't be achieved with my zoom lens. But obviously that isn't a walkaround lens.

Kneecapped is a good way to put it. My 35mm prime on my a7iii was producing excellent quality on my travels, but I couldn't capture so much of what I saw. The superzoom captured it. Friends and family love the pics and in 20 years I think I'll be very happy to relive the trip even if the IQ is not up to snuff.

I heard the Sony 50mm f/1.2 bullshits its widest aperture and secretly makes the camera bump up its ISO. Any truth to that?

That's absolutely the reason I gravitate toward them, I carry three tiny standard primes between f/2 and f/2.8

There is nothing meaningful you can do to improve the RX100 without breaking the design philosophy.
a9 tier AF, Stacked BSI sensor, EVF, 4k video, IBIS, tilt screen, zoom lens.
Upgrading the sensor, glass or processor wouldn't justify a new camera.
Upgrading the size of the sensor or glass would increase the size of the camera.
That said. If Sony made a RX500 the size of a Fujifilm X-e5 with APSC sensor and 28-200mm f.2.8-5.6 or 28-75 f.1.8-3.2 while keeping all the other features, that would be insane.
