>QM question: Are there any special occasions you mark in your quests/traditions that you do? Even something like asking questions at the beginning/end of the thread or art for certain points in the story.
>Player question: What would encourage you to make a fanwork (art/a side story) of a quest you like? Does /qst/'s nature as a 4chan board make you less inclined to? Have you ever made something for a quest you like before?
>General question: What are you looking forward to for April Fools, the annual 4chan bit, something elsewhere, or gimmick quests? If you're answering this after April 1st, do you have any expectations for increased activity in the upcoming season(s)?
>Lurker question: If you can make it to vote, vote! If not, when are you reading quests? Somewhere you can't easily post? Are you a phoneposter or simply a PC lurker?
>Miscellaneous question: If you won the lottery tomorrow but you had to buy 4chan, how would you improve the /qst/ing experience?

Saw further up where someone was planning out a Resident Evil thread, so to hop on the survival horror train I thought I’d go ahead and gauge interest for a Silent Hill Quest. Let me know what sounds the most appealing. > 1. Heavy SH1 and SH3 inspiration, a classic cult-centric plot. The player is stranded in silent hill on the eve of a massive ritual while hordes of cultists pursue. Less sh2 melancholy horror and more of a fast paced escape, survival, and “me vs them” focus. 2. >SH2 inspired, psych horror, Town and its powers played as a personal hell In the late 80’s a prison transport bus heading south breaks down on the outskirts of Silent Hill Maine, going deeper into the town the convicts and their handlers will all face their own trials. player character is chosen out of a tight main cast, the others will persist in the world and can be encountered as the story goes on like the humans from SH2. Focus on personal horror, slow burn, paranoia, and group dynamics >3. An original setting using broad strokes associated with the series, Silent Hill F, the SIREN games, P.T another world, horror, puzzles, being a dumbass with a lead pipe. However the setting and its threats will be somewhere else entirely instead of the town everyone’s used to. Allows some creativity for new content and has the potential to get kinda weird but you’re missing out on an iconic locale and vibe. Willing to change these premises or mix it up depending on what fits best.

What kind of system do you use to generate and keep track of your characters, if any? I have been looking at writing tips (give your characters wants and needs, show them doing things instead of talking, have them advance the plot etc.) and how QMs are handling characters in their stories and I still fail at making it click in my head and coming up with a system for interesting characters. I can run a solo character through Ironsworn, I can write a conversation between two characters, but when I tried to run a quest the characters just fell flat.

>>6242347 I'd run with Option 2 if I had the chance. People tend to get really attached to their protags here and it sounds like it would fit right into the quest format! Not sure I'd go with the 80's Convict idea, but who knows? If it were up to me I'd probably focus on just one of the prisoners. Silent Hill's difficult to land, but it would be pretty rad if someone ran it!
>>6242353 Best advice I can give is read and people-watch. See how other authors establish their characters and study how people in real life talk and act. Some of the stuff we take for granted can really bring a character to life--for example, do they swear a lot? Gesture with their hands? Use flowery language? A lot of simple details like those can change how a character reads. Again, the simplest advice I can give is to read other works, even if they're quests, video games, movies, etc... reading and writing tend to go hand-in-hand and widen your 'toolbox', so to speak.

>>6242353 I kind of just pretend they're real people. So it's less of me writing a character and more transcribing someone's life. I merely cut out the extraneous details that aren't pertinent.

>>6242347 I'd vote for option 1. Every SH game after 4 tried to retread Silent Hill 2, to disastrous results. The prison bus premise is also straight out of Downpour, so a focus on the original concepts from 1 and 3 seem like the stronger option.
I can't judge option 3 without being familiar with your writing, an original setting totally depends on your creativity.

>>6242353 I usually start with a fictional or real person I find interesting, expand out from there by adding/subtracting traits and adding gimmicks, and then distill it down to a little list. Once I've written them long enough to get a feel for their vibe, I no longer need the list...
Though once or twice I've forgotten a supporting character's name, and I really wished I had kept a list at that point. IlvermoryQM !kCM7IdCDew

>>6242353 There's not necessarily a system to it, but there are a few things I keep in mind. Also, don't be afraid if characters come off as tropey at first, time and interaction adds depth on its own. Just don't make it too tropey unless that's what you're going for.
1) Is this character meant to produce conflict? If so, then with who? The players or other NPCs?
1.1) If they're a driver of conflict then what conflict do I want to present/allow the characters to explore? Come up with (a) character(s) that will produce the maximal amount of conflict or drama.
A classic example is when you have romance in a story...and then it turns into a love triangle by having the third pillar be a dear friend to one or both of the couple. e.g. Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot
2) If the character's not meant to produce conflict, they should still have a drive. It gives them a lever by which they influence and can be influenced by the rest of the story.
2.1) If they simply exist and float through the story then they can probably be cut.
As for quirks/basic characterization, a nifty little tip from a manual I recently read was to tag each character with an item/body part. They attempt to solve all problems they're presented with through characterization associated with that item/body part.
Someone might be 'the wallet', and solve everything with money. They might be 'the hands' and insist on being personally involved with things. They might be 'the microscope' and pursue excessive information on a situation to solve it.
But really you need to describe more thoroughly where it is that you stumbled. If you link your quest we could look at it and provide better advice.

I dunno who needs to hear this but stop thinking about your goated past, and start thinking about your goated future.

>>6243003 The intention of the message was to remind people who have received praise before to not get preoccupied by past glories and instead focus on continuing to deliver good work and receive new glories.
But now that you mention it, it applies to people who haven't received enough praise to become an egomaniac all the same. Stop worrying about how shit you were beyond what you can learn from your failures, and look to the future where you may yet become a better QM. Actually learning from yourself is easier said than done, but still. Stop living in a past you aren't still in. If you aren't goated, stop focusing on how you aren't and become it. Shut your mouth and open your ears, and all that.

(In terms of plot, are they here to get the story to a certain point?) >What actions could the main character take, that would change the behavior of this character? Everything else is sorta supplementary to these questions in my head. I just make up random quirks or speech styles on the spot, after I’ve answered these. As long as the character has a clear purpose, or there’s a use in indulging them, I find that it works. Like if you have the most boring, dry person possible, you could make it abundantly clear that the MC NEEDS to impress them and try and draw some kind of reaction out, in order to get some benefit.

RWBY QUEST UPDATE!
Attention to all fairy tale thingies!
We are in dire need of your help. We urgently need over 1 million dollars in order to help give a home to all those refugees after the blackout incident we had nearly a month ago!
It is a million dollars mandatory for each helper. Or, if instead of giving out money, you can instead go here and vote in our RWBY quest! Join, have fun, enjoy a more mature take on the worldbuilding, completely original characters and a grim story (Pun intended, Yang approves).
For each second of attention you give to this post, I'll hire one more rat to run the 4chan servers so that no blackouts happen anymore! And if you decide to help us with a click, your participation and enjoyment of this quest then I'll happily give out a hat to the rats!
So what are you waiting for? Call now! It is free! Just remember that, if you read this and you decide to not help, you'll be leaving a rat hatless! You monster...
