>>6229386“Oh yes, I’m a fan of your work.” The Yasha says. “The Riahi don’t make mistakes. If they want someone dead, then that person had better be ready to offer up gold to the Boatman for passage to the other world. That you sit before me now is a testament to your abilities. And judging by your constitution, I can see the report was not exaggerating. My name is Kosmas. I am here on official business, seeking a man that I understand you might be familiar with. A mage by the name of Andreas. Does he ring any bells?”
>“Hmm, hard to say.” You lie. You wanted to give nothing away if possible. Bronte was depending on you to find Andreas first before Kosmas did. “I met a lot of people in Ithaca. I don’t think he stood out though.”“Oh. That’s too bad.” Kosmas says, his red eye gleaming. “I suspect he may be hiding here in Shangri-La. Your assistance in finding the man would be most welcome. Given that he was likely the one responsible for the Riahi’s attack, I’m sure you’d greatly enjoy a few minutes alone with him?”
>You shrug your shoulders. “Nowadays, people are always trying to kill me. It happens all the time.”Kosmas laughs, his milk moustache growing thicker as he takes another sip. “Your honesty is refreshing. That’s what I like about you foreigners. You and Klement do not mince your words. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to enjoy a good chuckle. As you can see, I’m not very popular around these parts.” Kosmas turns towards a huddled group of bar patrons, who’d been standing by watching your conversation. As soon as his gaze meets them, they avert their eyes immediately.
>“Why’s that?”“Because I am a Yasha.” Kosmas says. “Wherever I go, death surely follows. My job is to enforce the laws of Morfis, passed down centuries back from the mouth of the Sorcerer King himself. I cannot abide mages who would abuse their gifts. Should I come across a sorcerer using their magic for nefarious purposes, I must not hesitate to slay them on the spot. No matter who they are. And unfortunately, here in Shangri-La, there are plenty of mages with a guilty conscience.”
>“You just kill them? Outright? They don’t even get a trial?”“I am their trial.” Kosmas says, finishing off his drink and placing it gently on the bar. “Perhaps that is the real reason I like you Fodlanders. As foreign guests here for the Competition, our laws governing the usage of sorcery do not apply to you. So, I’m free to let my guard down just a bit in your presence, and to ignore what my eye tells me.”
>“Your eye? What does that mean?”“Yasha trade secret.” He smiles. “Tell me, is it true you plan to take on the gauntlet?”
>“I do.”“Would you like my assistance?” He offers.
>“What could you do?”“Keep things honest. For both sides.”
Kosmas’ red eye gleams once more.
