"Ramiel won't reach the Evas down here until midnight at this rate, so we have plenty of time to form a plan to kill him. We're planning on a little thing called Operation Yashima. We'll be rerouting the nation's entire electrical output into our positron rifle to attack the enemy from afar. Since the Angel apparently reacts to any large entity from up close, we'll have either Unit 00 or Unit 01 snipe it with our prototype positron rifle."
"The entirety of Japan will be out of energy?" You're taken aback by how easily they can siphon power to HQ.
"Only for a few minutes. A few people in hospitals might die from the blackout, but it's better than everyone dying in case we fail," Aoi pragmatically remarks.
"Well, where do I fit into this?"
"Ritsuko thought the pilots could use your supportive words. Shinji in particular had a pretty bad panic attack after being hurt by the laser back there. We had to sedate him in the hospital, or else he would've convulsed."
Whoa. Shinji's doing that badly? Guess being sent out by himself against Ramiel wasn't such a good idea when he's used to Rei's additional support in combat. This might have been the first time it really got to him that he could die a very slow and painful death if he made a single mistake.
"What about Rei?"
"She's volunteered to shoot Ramiel by herself without assistance, only it's likely the Angel will fire back at her, so we'd like to convince Shinji to pilot Unit 01 and be her shield. But given how he is right now... We're not sure how to get through to him."
"...How many rounds can the positron rifle fire?" You ask, hoping you could somehow gamble your luck with only Rei piloting the Eva tonight.
"It's a plasma weapon. It can fire however many shots we wish so long as it doesn't overheat, which happens every time it fires. We have to wait a bit for it to cool down, but at most, Rei can realistically only fire twice at Ramiel before things go south. That's why we'd like Shinji to hold a heat shield just in case she misses the first shot."
"Do we have any plans in case the worst comes to worst and they both fail?"
Aoi sweats bullets, already growing anxious at the thought.
"The Geofront can activate a self-destruct sequence commanded by Ritsuko and the MAGI system. Should we fail to defeat Ramiel, we have enough explosives to destroy all of Tokyo-3, where the rest of the world will have a few more days to live until the next Angel appears to cause the Third Impact."
Great contingency plan, Ritsuko...
