The funeral was supposed to be about Afro, it was supposed to be about Chien but now some jumped-up jarhead was talking shit to her boss. She was right on the verge of kicking whatever teeth he had left in him but held herself back when she saw Tony’s tearful eyes. Escalating a fight to something physical would be in poor taste so she just watched him walk away.
Composing herself after a few minutes, she went backstage to make sure her band was ready. After the final checks were finished, she went up on stage and tapped on the mic trying to get everyone’s attention.
“Hello everyone, I’m sure everybody’s got a lot of things they wanted to get off their chests but let’s not forget why we’re here.”
She laughed nervously, trying to lift the mood somewhat.
“Personally I thought we would have more eulogies. I figured Chien was popular enough that everybody would wanna talk about how they met him, I’m sure we all have a Chien story haha.”
“Truth be told though I pretty much completely ignored the guy. It wasn’t like I didn’t like him or anything but he was…”
“He was too bright.”
“So bright I could only catch glimpses of what he was doing, could only see the small parts of the man.”
“Afro was different because he never got a chance to shine.”
She cleared her throat, being careful with her words. The truth was, neither of their death had hit her particularly hard but the atmosphere was suffocating.
“From what little I knew of the two, I’ve got a song I think they’d like.”
The lithe, porcelain-like woman started swaying to the music as her band started playing. Humming, mostly to herself the instrumentals as she followed the rhythm
