You are Mouse, the ogre. Although raised by humans you found yourself in service of the dark elven queen - and with her blessing you have embarked on a quest to purge the corruption plaguing the very world you live in. And currently, you seemed to be on the course of bringing this quest to a conclusion. Or at least that is what you had surmised and what you were hoping for. In truth you had precious little idea of what exactly was happening – moments ago you were witnessing a duel between Vult, the mercenary leader, and Maia, the woman who loved him. Then, you were facing the Vult-shaped puppet of the Beast. And now, inexplicably, after journeying through the realm beyond the material, with Laurentia for companion, you found yourself in the midst of a quickly dissolving vision of what seemed to be a not so distant past, watching interaction between an old jaded priest and a scribe assigned a dubious task. “When you feel frightened by the world, remember what gave you the hope to carry on.” The words flow forth, and you’re not sure who is the one to speak them, or if they are audible at all, but in either case both the scribe and the old priest seem to respond to it, their eyes widening slightly and the afternoon sunlight pouring in through the window brightening by a tiniest bit. Or perhaps it was just their eyes that have seen a modest spark of light they didn’t recall having. That is the last idea you manage to formulate as the mists gather and obscure the scene, hurling your consciousness elsewhere. I… I think something changed. I think that helped. You feel Laurentia reach out to you, across whatever the gulf separates you right now. Impression you gain from her voice is strained, but resolved and holding on strong. I can’t seem to track you where and when you go, I just feel your steps. Please be careful. You’re not sure if your own feelings of trust and reassurance get carried back to her when the mists swirl once again, revealing the image you’ve felt would be coming.

You found yourselves amidst a scene of carnage. Stench of death, freshly dried blood, moans and cries of the wounded and an occasional cheer of triumph or cry of pain pervaded the surroundings beneath the glowering midday sun. Your gaze fell on a young lad in white cloth navigating the carnage, surveying the bodies and looking for the wounded that could still be saved. He was one of your subordinates, an acolyte assigned to medical duties, sent out to search for survivors by you, a middle aged chaplain. And you realize that you’ve put him to the task only partly because it needed to be done. But in large part you did so in order for him to not be around at your own next destination. “You coming already, padre?” A man around your age, though with harder, harsher features and clad in an officer’s uniform – the livery was unknown to (You), but vaguely familiar in most generic of terms. With somewhat heavy heart you turn away and forward, and fixed your gaze on where you needed to go. It was at the edge of the field of battle, where the enemy had their camp you were assaulting. Several of the tents were still standing, some having been set aflame or trampled as the fighting extended in that direction. One of tents in particular, fortunately, as it was rather a large one, was left unscathed. Several sets of footsteps matched yours. Subordinates of the officer, your flock, and right now a group of knights singled out among survivors of the brutal, bloody battle to check the enemy encampment for evidence of heresy and blasphemy, and usable spoils of war. As you approached the large tent, the officer nodded at one of the knights accompanying you, to peek in while the others took up guarding posts. The designated scout did as commanded, blade raised in anticipation of a possible ambush or a trap… but there was neither. Instead the knight’s weapon arm fell along with his jaw. “Uhhh…” “What is it?” The officer asked, but didn’t wait for a response which didn’t seem immediately forthcoming in any case. The surprised knight was pushed aside and the officer stepped boldly into the tent, with you on his heels. First thing that hit you was the smell. Even if you’ve been steeling yourself against it, it was a different reek from that of the battlefield and subsequently you had to keep yourself from gagging. “Heh.” The officer grumbled with a smirk at the vision you came to share as soon as your eyesight accomodated to the dimmer light. And you were offered even a dimmer vision.

Mostly naked except for their bindings and occasional dirty bandages. They were restrained, but you were unsure to what extent their captors need to have bothered given their vacant glares and expressions. One of them stirred at the commotion and turned her gaze towards you. “Welcome back, masters…” She spoke with slurred voice. “Have you come to celebrate another victory?” Before you can gather yourself enough to respond, the officer speaks: “In a manner of speaking… after all, to the victor go the spoils.” The officer turns to invite his men, but pauses when his gaze comes across your expression. “You got a problem, padre?” The officer asks. “I admit your healing magics came in handy. But need I remind you that it was these men that put their life on the line so that your sort can preach your platitudes to the rest of us? Don’t you think they deserve some, as you scholar types say it, succour?” Conflict rages behind your eyes, and not simply because of (You)r outrage, and (You)r imagination casting faces of your friends on top of those of the abused captives, but also because of the chaplain’s own conflicting feelings about his commandments, own urges and sympathy for the men who did just go through a brutal fight where many of them lost lives, limbs and comrades. The officer, whom your other memory identified as a knight-captain Levantine, and you could see some family resemblance to both the mild mannered mage and his severe, grizzled father, was looking at you with a firm gaze with modest portion of conviction and a hint of a threat. Would he raise his blade against you if confronted? You knew he was not particularly pious man, though he seemed to show deference to rules and discipline to follow them, and he seemed to care for well-being of his men past their usefulness in combat, if not by much. It was time to make a choice.>You could stand your ground. ”This is wrong. You know this. We are supposed to be better than that. You want to give the man a piece of mind at what he’s suggesting. You feel your own flagging resolve reinforced with (You)r mixture of compassion, and outrage. You have so much to tell him. But perhaps that would not be the best course of action, for you or for those women. Perhaps there’s some other way to reach this man who has built a specific set of armour around his own heart. “I was once told, that the first person a leader has to master… is themselves.” You are surprised at how calmly you are able to speak under the officer’s steely gaze, and at first as his frown deepens, you wonder if you’ve maybe miscalculated. But whether it be because your words resonated well enough with his own soul, or perhaps because he saw the hint of your own conviction behind your eyes, his features soften somewhat next, and he breaks the eye contact, turning towards the women, some of them looking expectantly, most with blank expressions of someone who’s become accustomed to being treated like an inanimate object. “Priest… you have some gall telling me that.” The officer grunts. “Still, I must admit that you are not wrong. Men!” The abrupt shout of that last word made you wince, and a pair of soldiers entered the tent from behind you. “Sir… eeeh…?” The soldier’s gaze drifts away onto the captives. “Eyes on me while I’m talking to you!” Captain commands. “Yes, sir!” “You two hurry back to our camp and fetch some cleaning supplies and some clothes.” The soldiers salute, and after giving one more look to the scene before them, depart brusquely when the officer’s scowl deepens. Captain then turns back to you. “Go ahead and do what you feel is proper priest. And your goddess won’t help you if I find you doing anything else.” You nod solemnly at the threat you feel as superfluous. Or was it really? In either case, you turn towards the abused captives, with a prayer familiar to your host on your lips, and the sensation of light gathering in your soul and palms of your hand familiar to the both of you. So you move to undo the women's’ bindings and tend to their wounds…

After some time of work that is considerably more demanding emotionally than physically, and going through several songbooks’ worth of litanies devoted to purity and chastity, you are finally able to exhale with relief, satisfied that you’ve done what you could for the women. The rest would probably take time and gentler touch of the sisterhood of nuns. The captives were set down against a different structure of the former enemy camp, clad in spare cloaks the soldiers had brought. Most of them were asleep peacefully, few others were staring at nondescript points far away. Only one of them seemed to be actively surveying the scene, her haunted expression showing she was fully expect to wake up into continuation of a nightmare any time now, even as the tent they were held in has been put to the flame. Something felt… strange, to you, at that moment. As if the sun barely visible in the overcast sky shone just a touch brighter than it would have otherwise. There was a sense of relief you felt in the air as the soldiers walked past, tallying the loot and dragging dead cultists towards a funeral pyre. That last sight stirred a hint of sadness in you. Conflicted as you were about it, you kept it to yourself. Those were the enemies who have made their choice to scorn the path of light and embark on the path of cruelty. Still… why did they do so? What circumstances would have seen them choose otherwise? How many were driven by their own ruthlessness and nihilism, and how many were dragged along because those were the only principles they have ever known? How many allowed themselves to follow in the wake of despair they were raised in? Of course, as your gaze shifted back to meet the empty glare of the liberated women, much of the sympathy withered away. And you were filled with a bittersweet feeling when you saw one of the soldiers bring a bundle of rations and waterskins for them, his movements gentle and caring, as you catch yourself wondering, how far removed you were from a reality where events had taken quite a darker turn. Was there a way to save them all? One battle may have been won, but the struggle that takes place in heart of each of us, that one seemed to be and remain eternal.

As the shadows swirl and take you away, you convey to your current host, and perhaps those around him, a final message – that even if not every battle may be won, they can always strive towards victory within the choices they currently face. You feel a few sparks of resolve spread out before your vision is wholly overtaken and you find your self hurtling towards else… when? Once more. This time, the transition is less smooth, and the atmosphere feels thick. Wherever, whenever, however you are traversing, you must be getting closer to your destination. That, or perhaps the difficulty of movement is caused simply by the fact that you’re on the ground and everything hurts. Gathering your bearings the reality around you resolves into crisp morning air that was anything but fresh, laden heavy with smell of a city – the excess, the misery, the fear and the malice all wormed their way into the cocktail of smells. Of course you didn’t have time to analyze it, you were in a rush to take stock of your surroundings under stress of some nondescript imminent danger. You found yourself in a dark, narrow alley flanked by tall structures, morning light above you and in front of you the traffic of the adjoining street was eclipsed by something large, tall and menacing. And with that, the pieces fell into place, and the nondescript danger resolved itself into the towering figure of the Emperor Canicula, the name that struck at least one of awe, envy, fear and/or lust into hearts of nearly everyone in the world. Towering giant of a man, his powerful build and handsome face would have commanded attention even if not for his station, at least for most. Unfortunately for your mother, she was among the precious few who could resist. Perhaps that is also a reason for how you… (You)r current host, came to be. “Out of the fight already?” The emperor sneered at you, his thick blade hanging casually to his side. Your left hand went up to your chest which still hurt from the blow, the other went in search of the hilt of your own sword… only to find the scabbard empty. Of course, you’ve already drawn your blade, it was lying short distance next to you. You feel your gaze snap from the weapon to the man who had sired you. His smug grin widened. “No? Good. I was beginning to get worried. It would reflect poorly on me to spawn such pathetic bastards.” You feel a surge of power flow through you, intermixing with your rage. You scramble for your weapon, half expecting to be cut down halfway there, but somehow you reach it and grab it like a lifeline.

Whatever origins of the boy’s conflict with the emperor were specifically, as soon as he would give in to the temptation of the darkness, he would no doubt grow to match and perhaps even surpass the older man in cruelty. Perhaps that was exactly what was about to happen. Do not lose yourself to the darkness, you tell to both your selves. You can fight, and you can win, without subordinating yourself to the darkness. But you want to. Oh how you want to. The promise, the allure… it is all that you could ask for, and more. To not just dispense your retribution to the man before you, but to eclipse, humiliate and crush him. To take his dignity, his power and his life. Is that not what you want? Is that not the natural thing to seek? Is that not the way of the world? But do you want it to be? Do you want to truly see yourself in his place? Is that what you wish for those you hold dear? Your mother could be easily uplifted from her squalor… but would she find the price of you likening yourself to the man who hurt her an bearable one? … Very well, let’s try to win this on our own terms. With that, and a new light of resolve igniting behind your host’s eyes, you adjust and shift your stance, racking your brain and all the muscle memory you’ve accrued in anticipation of what’s perhaps most challenging fight of your life… ...And then the world comes to a halt.

Your momentary alarm at this development quickly subsides at the touch of a familiar presence. There’s someone… that can help… I hope... Laurentia’s voice is weak and strained, as if coming from great distance and a difficult struggle, but the warmth within brings reassurance to your soul. The pleasant sense of peace, and the passing embrace, as if brush of a stray lock of hair, is promptly displaced by a new voice. A harsh and familiar, but also mellowed out since last you’ve heard it. “Step aside, Ogre. You may be good at what you do, but this is what I trained for, for all my life. It is only fair… that this skill is put to a good use, after all the mistakes I’ve made, and atrocities I had almost committed.” Presence that you recognize as that of Lord Levantine coalesces, and momentarily you are overwhelmed by the sum of all regrets and loathing enveloping it like a heavy, immobilizing coat. It’s a strange feeling that you feel the distinctive personality rub against you, not entirely unlike in some ways as when you’ve felt Celestine’s or Laurentia’s touch. And for a moment you find yourself worried, if the now is not getting too crowded for your host to not go insane. “Goddess, thank you for accepting this as my bequest. I am ready to face the oblivion now…” The time resumes, and presence of the old lord fades out, leaving behind… You dodge, weave deflect and counter. The emperor seems momentarily taken aback by the sudden shift in the dynamics, as the boy he is facing begins to move with shrewdness of a seasoned warrior, but his grimace shifts from one of smug superiority into one of exhilaration and excitement as what he expected to be a one sided beatdown turns into a proper duel with his life at the stake.

That, you realize, and the boy’s newly gained battle insight seems to agree, would be a problem, as despite your ability, the emperor still held an advantage in purely physical terms, and that meant he would sooner or later gain the upper hand. Smug smirk returning to the man’s face showed that the older fighter was aware of this as well. “Impressive, boy. Perhaps I’ve misjudged you. Perhaps you could have been of use to me… but alas, as you’ve raised your hand at the emperor, there is but one outcome to be had here.” Somehow the emperor seems almost remorseful when saying that. But that didn’t stop him from renewing his onslaught, forcing you to focus on defending yourself, and giving you some hope that this flurry of attacks will help at least wear the royal down somewhat. Meanwhile, your own sword was growing uncomfortably heavy in your hand. As the fight continued, the skill conferred by an atoning spirit allowing the boy to maintain equal footing with the emperor in this peculiar back alley duel, you were running through your options. Firstly, you managed to gather some insights into the emperor’s fighting style yourself. It was risky, but you were confident you could surprise the older swordsman. The fight was not unwinnable. Furthermore, for all his cockiness, the emperor was still but a man. What was truly going through his head? Could something you would say have gotten through to him? Was there anything beyond those imperious eyes to get through? Or perhaps you could at least distract him somehow. Trickery for sure, but such was the nature of combat. In the end, however, you decide to take a different path. There was the force, still pressing against the boy’s will, though luckily he seemed to have taken your warning to heart, for now. Depending on how fight developed, desperation might still push the boy to take the offer. But there was something you knew that neither the boy nor the emperor seemed to be aware of, or if they were, they dismissed the possibility. There was another power, one that did not seek to corrupt. These circumstances were strange in more way that you could count, even aside from the fact of a metaphysical struggle you never could truly put your finger on, even though you’ve built some feel for it during this quest of yours… you were not quite yourself, as you remembered it. You were not surrounded by your friends, and the presence of Laurentia you’ve grown somewhat accustomed to lately, seemed distant. With a sense of urgency, as if you truly needed to gasp for air, you feel yourself propelling yourself… up? Forward? Or merely thrashing in place? It was impossible to tell in this directionless limbo. But perhaps not quite directionless. You did have a direction in mind, a goal, an objective, a destination. A flicker appears before you, and you will yourself to accelerate towards it. You… reach out. Whether it was your mind putting images to what you were perceiving or some other reason, you saw your hands, at least you thought they were your hands, reaching towards the light, and… brushing the darkness off it? No, it was more like… you reached for the light, and felt the slick slime of darkness at your fingertips. You dug in… and pulled it apart, like a sheet of punctured fabric, broadening what seemed like a pinhole into a tear, then into a rift. A mixed cry shook your world. A cry of anger, of pain, or pleasure and displeasure, of disappointment and relief, of countless voices in a jumble of contradictory emotions and expression. You were unable to focus on any of them, nor did you feel confident in your ability to make sense of them if you could. But that didn’t matter. The rift was open, and spreading further even beyond where you felt was your reach. Instead, you could find more sparks, a few at first, but gradually you noticed a multitude of them in the distance criss-crossing the darkness, and you felt the reality stretch and disintegrate around you, casting your perception once again into the unknown.

But whatever it was, it spread the rifts and tears even further… along with my presence. I… I’ve been... She trails off. “What?” I’ve been changed. Transformed. The darkness parts, and a familiar radiant figure emerges from it. Laurentia’s form seems more solid, somehow, her glow more intense. You could see the semblance to Celestine, yet she was clearly her own person, resplendent wings of pure light spread out behind her. “What does it mean?” I don’t understand that for myself. Or perhaps don’t know how to put it to concepts I could confer to you. I can only tell that much: where I used to be a fake, a plaything… I’ve been given substance. She makes a pause, allowing you to take in what she was saying. “Does that mean…” That the Beast was telling the truth? No. At least not all of it. Only as much as what it liked. Perhaps it was also lying to itself. But what was true is that I was never meant to be a true source of hope. At least not by the one who drew me into this world… I was always meant to be broken, taken into possession and used as a pleasuring implement. And those who followed me, to follow me in this fate or watch on from sidelines of despair. You feel compelled to embrace the goddess. She allows it, and you draw her form nearer, familiar sensation of warmth washing over your soul, again feeling her wings brush against your back. You can feel her appreciate your sentiment, but somehow it still feels she’s the one comforting you. You’re reminded of your earliest memories and your mother’s embrace. It’s fine. I’m surprised myself that learning confirmation of my role didn’t crush me. But I think I have your choice to thank for that. “I…” You hesitate. Perhaps it would be for the best to simply collect yourself, and return from… whenever, wherever you found yourself, back to the real world. If that was even possible. If the world has truly changed, what would you be returning to? Was it truly that simple as simply appearing back among the ruins of the Atlassia? You never even got to see the outcome of the fight between the boy and the emperor… But those things weighed little on your mind right now. There was something else, something you had thought you had buried as a childish delusion, one that you’d simply have to come to terms would never come to pass and would remain a scar on your heart that could only be covered, never mended or healed. Until now. You’ve just been cast across time. You’ve seen Atlassia at the height of its splendour. You knew not how and were unsure of why or to what end, but if you could have been taken to those moments, and encountered men of ages past… perhaps… perhaps… “I’d like if I could…” You hesitated, but inviting warmth of Laurentia encouraging you to express yourself finally eases you to share what you desire. “...if it would be possible for me to see my parents, one more time.” Laurentia looks at you with a kind smile, and you feel as she’s going to say something, but before you can perceive her response, the ambience around you ignites itself wit ha blinding light, and you feel yourself once again shifting.

usurper-of-the-beach !!K6WILNlXw/I ID:k7cLkJwQ Sat 28 Sep 2024 16:40:24 No. 6112632 Report When the light subsides, your vision clears momentarily – for a few moments, before growing blurry again. Those few moments are more than enough for recognition to settle in – recognition of a place you knew no longer existed in what you remembered as the physical realm. Simple, cozy dwelling, familiar shapes, familiar wooden walls and floors, familiar furnishing, familiar scent and textures, familiar shine of the midday sun filtered through the simple linen curtains. All of that would probably be enough to move you with nostalgia and sentiment, even from your shifted perspective where everything felt so much smaller than you remember. But in this case none of it was why your vision was hazy. There was another reason for that. Familiar faces. You’re not sure who was first to move. It might have been you, or it might have been them. But it didn’t matter. It happened quickly enough that it didn’t matter. The warmth you now felt was also quite familiar, and very physical, warmth of real people wrapping you in a tight embrace. “Mouse, my child. My darling son.” You’re not sure if it’s your mother or your father who said that. In fact they probably said it one over another. “Mom… Dad…” You feel your voice hitch. You didn’t mind. Nothing else was important right now, only this moment. “There is so… so much…” “Shh…” Your mother soothes you. “I know. We know.” “Son, I am so proud of you. I always knew you would grow up to be a good person.” Father adds. You want to say something, but words fail you, for now. Perhaps it’s just as well. As you hold your family, those who introduced you to the concept of love and kindness, close to your heart, as you let your feelings flail giddily at this opportunity, you simply cherish the moment, quietly wishing it would never end. For now, it lasted. While it lasted, was there something you wished to say?>Yes, thank them for what they’ve given you >Yes, express your sorrow for all the ways your existence had hurt them >Yes, something else (make a suggestion) >No, there is nothing more to be said.

There was one thing that you really needed to get off your chest now that you had a chance. Well, maybe more than one. There was also the pang of guilt that circumstances of your conception, and your parents’ compassionate choice in response to it, had lead to much suffering and ultimately their violent end. Even though you knew none of it was your choice, you sometimes couldn’t help but wonder… ...but no. You knew and felt and saw well enough their love and conviction. They clearly did not regret their choice to raise you with love and care, and pushing your regret onto them would probably only serve your own gratification. You keep that to yourself, and move on to the actual emotion you wanted to express in full. Gratitude. “Thank you, mom, dad. Thank you so much for all you’ve done, all you’ve given me. I love you, and I believe that all the love you’ve showed me has sustained me to this day. I cannot thank you enough.” Is what you try to tell. You’re not sure if you can hear yourself saying it, or if you just mumble it, or if your voice falters to the point where words can be hardly made out. But you pour it all out all the same, and your mother and father seem to understand exactly what you wanted to convey. “Oh you big baby. I knew, I always knew… I felt it. You didn’t need to say anything.” Mom said. “But it sure is nice to hear it confirmed. And it takes courage to speak clearly.” Dad adds. “You don’t… or no, actually I think you do have an idea, my Mousie, how happy I am to know that you’ve held both of us so close to your heart. Just stay true to yourself as you have been, and I and father will always be with you.” “That’s right. We’ve shared with you all that we had to offer, our hopes and dreams included, and you’ve done best job of carrying them forward I could ever imagine. I couldn’t ask for a better son.” “Dad… mom…” You hold them tight, and they hold you, and you vision begins to gloss over once again, and only some of it was caused by the tears. You didn’t want the moment to end, but the moment was coming to a close. There was still time ahead for you traverse. Without being able to tell of a particular features, you did seem to have a sense of a forward, where you could feel yourself drifting, and at the same time you realized the surrounding is not entirely immutable either, rather its structure was shifting, barely perceptibly at first, but either it was that you managed to focus your mind on it better or because it was picking up in pace and intensity, the change became noticeable. Rewriting history would do everyone who fought against the Beast a major disservice, let alone all the chronological discrepancies it will invariably generate: without Olga's horde we wouldn't even EXIST as-is, nor would've Chloe served Olga as her sworn sword instead of just another nondescript face among many. Plus, as the saying goes, "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it", a world that have forgotten the evils of the Beast is bound to fall back into the clutches of a similar malevolence.
... the speech pattern does feel too motherly and too peaceful to not be Celestine, though: Olga would be more haughty (albeit playfully), Alicia would probably view us as a "big brother" figure, while Elle and Chloe would show more camaraderie instead of motherly concern.

Celestine It’s Celestine, the kind, gentle, loving soul that calls out to you. That’s waiting for you. That’s hoping and wishing and yearning to see you again. And you share her desire. You share her affection. You know it to be true now. That warmth you had felt whenever she turned her emerald gaze to you, so full of inner radiance, like a small sun of blazing kindness. You should have seen it earlier, but you didn’t allow yourself to. It was love. Have you been honest with yourself, or not? If you had used that word, would you be able to depart on this final quest as you have, or would you take her hand, no, would you pick her up as she was, taking her tender, soft, gentle form into your hulking arms and carry her away, away from it all, somewhere far away, where you could keep her safe even if the world itself was your enemy? You know you couldn’t do that. You knew you couldn’t do that. You may have wished you had, but she deserved something better than someone who did that to her. She was the kind of person that would give herself to save those under her charge without giving her own fate a second thought. And in the end, your choice turned out to be right, and your mission – a success. Not really by your own merit, and most certainly not just by merit of your admittedly formidable ogre strength. No, it was by support from those who bound their lives and hopes to yours, starting with your parents… and including Celestine’s love. The love you felt you could now truly embrace… or at very least, if what you’ve just felt, was only echo of your own emotions flowing free, with no cosmic mission binding them anymore. You had a different sort of mission now. One owed only to your heart. You had to see her again. Your eyes snap open, and for a brief moment you are blinded by the light of day.

This was perhaps for the first time you could take in the entirety of the ruins of Atlassia at once, in their raw, natural state. Like bleached bones of some ancient colossus spread out and crumbled across the land, partly overrun by the wilds retaking what was once taken from them, partly savaged by the brutish, practical construction erected by the cultists and the mercenaries. There are several areas which you recognize must be slave pits. And, oddly enough, a fresh looking crater. That one gives you pause, but in the greater context importance of the anomaly fades. The context is one of hope. The cloud cover was pierced, and rays of sunlight cast the landscape into a scene of a new dawn, more figuratively than literally. There was movement below, but it was neither the mixture of violence, despair and depraved revelry that had governed this place recently, nor was it clamour of a fight that could be heard only minutes (?) ago. It was a dazed, awed silence that reigned in this silent, shining moment. Nobody, except for you and perhaps select few individuals, had known what had just happened, but everyone felt it. Everyone knew that the world was changed. A cry pierced the air. No, not a single one, rather a symphony, or cacophony as it were, discordant chorus of expressions from all around. Jubilant cheers, some of them belonging to voices familiar and dear to you, intermixed with cries of shame and regret, and peppered sparingly with yells of fear, anger and frustration. Stunned stupor gave way to a chaotic dance, in many case of literal dance of joy as those who felt they were bound forever have known liberation for the first time. Some of those even among the mercenaries and cultists. Others, you noted the edge of the vision, took the change as their cue to flee, you saw some movement disappearing outwards into the foliage, fleeing for their lives in absence of what they thought was an eternal source of power. Immobile specks of blackness – many of them concentrated around the new crater, you note – hinted at fate of those who gave themselves fully to the force of cruelty. There could be no doubts. The beast’s power was broken, and its mockery of a cult had popped like a bubble. The black dog was no more, at least not as a foundation of the world. The war was over. Now you could all go home.

Subdued sound of sobbing in your close vicinity took you back from taking in the vista. Turning around, you see Maia on her knees, embracing the prone form of Vult and shaking with emotion. Your first thought is one of compassion. She had followed her love all the way to the end, only to lose it? Then, you frown as you notice movement – Vult was moving! You tense up, in case the mercenary lord tried something… ...but for once, your concern remains misplaced. The scarred hand, covered with dirt and dried blood, made no violent movements. It rose to Maia’s cheek, and cupped it tenderly, and you realized hers were not tears of sorrow, but of joy. She had gotten through to him, after all. You allow yourself a smile and quietly turn away, leaving the lovers to each other. The man had a lot to atone for, but perhaps this new world could offer him this chance as well. Instead, you head back to the stairway where you recall having left your friends, locked in a desperate fight. You don’t take more than two steps when figures begin to crest the terrace. Familiar ones. You don’t need to count them, you recognize instantly each and every one. Well, some of them you never learned by name. The penitent mercenaries were there too, though their approach was more deferential, whereas- “Oof.” You let out as a ball of pure light strikes into you and topples you. “Mouse! Mouse, Mouse, Mouse!” Sparky was dancing in the air, an eerie, eye watering spectacle that seemed to defy the mundane physics, which all things considered was to be expected. “It’s done, it happened, it’s done!” “Sparky?” “It’s amazing. It’s wonderful. It’s like I can breathe where before I suffocated. It’s like when the light had touched me and changed me, but better, but for everyone, but everywhere!” You think what to say to the enthusiastic former imp, but can’t seem to find words. Sparky doesn’t seem to mind as the rest of your companions join you, Smutkin even tooting a tune that somehow fits into, or rather around, Sparky’s jubilant manoeuvres. Elle and the twins… both the scouts and the golems… run in and gather around you. “Mouse...” “Sir!” “Leader!” “We did it!” “We won!” You pull yourself up and look across the jubilant faces. Your smile grows even wider as more figures begin arriving – a chocolate coloured blur leaps in to embrace you.

Phineous comes running after her, and then Olga taking dignified strides behind him, followed by remainder of the penitents. “Boss…” Phineous’s voice falters. You place your own hand on his shoulder. “It’s over.” You confirm and look at your gathered companions. It defied belief. You really made it. Your insane, foolhardy quest, has been brought to completion – and the enemy you still couldn’t fathom, has been broken. “Friends. Fellows. Companions.” You raise your voice. “Thank you, for staying true, to me, to the goddess, and to each other. But most importantly, to the spark of light that none of us had right to expect, but for the sliver we all carried in our own hearts. That somehow penetrated the veil of darkness and torn it asunder.” You make a pause, partly because you find yourself unsure where you’re finding what exactly to say. Still, it feels right enough to continue. “From this day onward, we are free. No longer consigned into the inescapable pits of despair, but free to choose the path of kindness, mercy and trust… that does also mean, we are free to reject it. But I think that at least we gathered here have already learned where that path leads.” You end the sentence with gaze resting on Olga. The dark queen nods solemnly. “Now then… as eager as I suppose most of us are to head out and enjoy our newfound liberty from the black dog’s scheming, there is still some work to do. Let’s split up and go around the ruins and the camp, looking for any slaves that may need unchaining or people otherwise in need of help. Once that is gone, we can see about organizing ourselves for a walk home for those who want to leave this place behind.” You end on a practical note. There’s no further cheering – your closest companions simply nod with warm smiles on their faces, while the penitents take the hint to get to work straight away and are the first to head down the temple and out among their former comrades – and victims.

Your attention drawn to the two golems you note that while everyone’s posture and gazes bore to some extent sign of the world changing event, the two golems seemed to have been affected even more profoundly, their alabaster bodies aglow with magical aura both stronger than before, but also fundamentally… purer? The two golems give you deferential bows before the group heads down towards their objective. “Ahem. Boss?” You turn to Phineous. “Yes?” “I think someone… well, I volunteer obviously, but I think Smutkin and Sparky would be great help to check out that ritual hole… crater, now. There may be someone left there.” “That was…?” Smutkin’s eyebrows rise. “It was place of my confrontation with Kin.” Olga takes the vote. “I’m not sure what my fate would have been had I underestimated the human before, but I assume it would not be a good one.” “You shoulda seen it, boss. It was insane.” Phineous says. “Sacrifices, ritual, dark vortices, the works. Her majesty wiped the floor with him though.” “I’ll hear your story and see that sketchbook of yours before I allow you to spread the word among my subjects.” Olga informed the orc who bowed and raised his hands in deference an concession. You note that Olga’s posture has changed as well. On one hand, she struck as regal a form as ever, producing a striking effect when coupled with her exotic dark elven beauty. But there were subtle differences that were not lost on you who had given the dark queen a lot of focus and attention. She seemed to carry herself easier, as if a considerable burden was lifted off her shoulders, and also in a more relaxed manner, as if she had shed some of the pretense she had previously worn like a cloak. She looked even more beautiful that way, you decided. Although as it were, currently it was a different elf that occupied more of your thoughts. “You can go ahead. I’ll catch up. There’s something I need to tell Mouse, first.” Sparky speaks up, his voice calm and level now. Phineous exchanges glances with you and Smutkin and the two of your older companions head down in a different direction. A thought strikes you and you turn to the gargoyle, who you note has undergone a shift in tone not unlike what Diana and Minerva had showed. “Tithe, I’d like you to take to skies and help us coordinate if one of the groups needs help or you spot someone in trouble.” “Of course, leader.” The flying golem replies and bolts up, leaving you alone with Chloe, Olga and Sparky. “Sparky, you had something on your heart?”

I will always be with you.” He raises his hands to his heart as he says that. “It is only thanks to your choices, your love and kindness, that I ended as I have… and it’s only because of that sliver of light you held onto, Olga, that I was allowed to survive.” Your eyes dart to Olga. “Ahem…” She clears her throat and you think you see a tiniest sparkle in the corners of her amber eyes. “None of that will be forgotten. Shelter those flames, and… just shelter them, okay? For yourselves, and for everyone. Thank you. That’s… I just had to say it, while I can.” “In that case there’s something I wanted to do, so I might as well do it now while I got the chance.” Chloe speaks up, and to everyone’s, including Sparky’s, it seems, surprise she bolts forward and tackle hugs the former imp. “Sorry if I was ever mean to you.” She says as she withdraws. “You never were.” Sparky assures her. “Your face and words were sometimes sterner than your eyes. But even back then I could tell your heart is very much alive under all the scars.” Chloe’s face darkens somewhat. “T-that’s enough.”

But for once, I can tell now that we can face them free of the ever arching despair.” “That’s something I wanted to ask about, my queen. What’s next for you?” “Didn’t I tell you we can dispense with those formalities, my champion? I think you’ve more than earned that right.” “It doesn’t come easily, lady… Olga.” “I suppose that’s how it should be after all. But what else is there for me but to head back north to reclaim my throne, and what’s left of my subjects, now without the nameless’s cursed blessings.” Olga replies and looks at you with a characteristic smirk. “And am I to understand that you have no intention of following your queen? I was so counting on having a reliable enforcer at my side.” Although you can tell there’s levity in her voice, there is a different calling in your heart right now, one you can’t deny. “My q- Olga, I know I owe you my life, and this quest, and I wish to show my gratitude and devotion in any way I’m able…” “But?” You hesitate for the first time as your loyalties come into direct confrontation. Perhaps sensing your inner conflict, Olga’s expression softens. “Forgive me, Mouse, my champion. You’ve more than earned any boon you could possible ask, and then some. Speak freely, now, and forever.” “There… is a boon I’d like to ask of you, my queen.” You say. “I… desire your blessing in a… romantic pursuit.” There’s a glint of understanding that flashes through Olga’s eyes. “I see.” She says, softly. “And who is the object of your affection?” “Lady Celestine.” You say. “I love lady Celestine.”

The words come as naturally as breathing to you. Like something that just belongs together. Which was somewhat awkward seeing as you were expressing that to two other women before you told about it Celestine herself. But you did, and it just felt right. The ongoing silence lasted too briefly for you to get nervous about it. Chloe’s eyes briefly widen, but both her and Olga’s expression quickly settle into small, kind smiles. “Heh.” Chloe smirks. “Of course.” Olga nods. “W-what’s with that reaction?” You’re slightly taken aback. “What did you expect? A scolding? Mocking laughter? Or perhaps… a jealous scene?” Olga raised her eyebrow. And you most certainly didn’t sense even a hint of wistfulness in that last query, that would be absurd. “I saw how you looked at her, and her at you. But even before that, back when we were discussing your quest back in the citadel, I had foreseen that this was all but inevitable. That unnatural spark you’ve carried, it was only natural you’d be drawn to her, the epitome of innocence, kindness and selflessness. So no, I’m not particularly surprised.” Olga said. “As for my blessings, you have them. Go forth and make her yours.” As if to give the occasion a ceremonial feel, she raises her hand and reaches towards you. You bow out of instinct and she touches your forehead. “I release you from my service. Pursue your heart. You’ve earned it.” As the dark queen withdraws her hand, Chloe approaches and squeezes your arm. “I had a feeling this would go that way. Good luck, Mouse. Be… be happy, for all of us, okay?” Her voice falters, but her smile is genuine, even as her crimson eyes gather some moisture. “Olga, Chloe…” You try to find words, but none seem to come forth. So you simply grab both chocolate elves into a hug, eliciting a surprised yelp from Chloe. Olga was clearly aloof from such petty surprises, but she did lean into the embrace.

“The power of love is a curious thing.” A slightly less familiar voice interrupts the moment. You release the two elves and see Maia had approached your group while supporting Vult. The mercenary commander’s stature was a far cry from the confident killing machine you’ve first seen him as, in spite of his undeniably powerful build, the withdrawal of the beast’s gifts played a number on him. Even so, his features seemed gentler, and his expression at relative peace. “Indeed. I’m glad it had worked out for you.” You say. And… you mean it. That Maia’s feelings for Vult came through to the extent where he was willing to renounce the beast was no small feat. Even so, a part of you felt that this was not the end of the story. The man himself was probably of the same opinion as he offered a rueful, somewhat pained smile. “There’s no need to beat about the bush, ogre. I know I’m headed for the gallows, if I’m lucky.” “Like hell you are. I’m not giving you up so easily, or am I going to let you take the easy way out.” Maia objected. “Maia… if all I had left were few days of being there for you rather than myself, it will have been more than I deserve.” The mercenary leader says, and as far as you can tell, he seems to mean it. But then again, he was not known to be the charismatic mercenary lord for nothing. “You do indeed have much to atone for, mercenary.” Olga speaks up, her voice once again a regal weapon of the dark queen, the personal warmth and softness she let show earlier concealed perfectly. “You are not wrong that there will be those in the human realm that would see you dead. If you were one of my subjects, you would have met a swift end for sure.” Vult’s gaze of broken, but nonetheless – steel, meets Olga’s golden glare and his expression remains neutral as he waits for the dark queen to make her point. “...however, between the chance your loving companion has fought for, and my champion permitted to take root, I am convinced the selfless queen you had sought to destroy will be eager to give you chance to show sincerity of your redemption with long and arduous work – in good company.” The mercenary keeps looking in silence before eventually bowing his head. “It is as you say, your majesty… and I can only strive to not squander the chance I’ve been given.” There’s an uncomfortable silence for a moment. “Why don’t we start right away. There’s a lot of work to be done down in the camp.” You suggest. “Yes. Let’s. There’s no better way to prove oneself than through work.” Maia agrees gratefully, and so the five of you – Sparky was nowhere to be seen, having probably flown off to catch up with Phineous and Smutkin when you were talking to the elves about your romantic pursuits – proceed to descend from the Atlassian temple.

As you slowly make your way down – slowly, because you moved to help Maia with supporting still unsteady Vult, making you wonder how much of a use he’s going to be. Though admittedly with time he seemed to be regaining at least some strength with each step. Even though he took a beating during your fight, much of it was probably of metaphysical rather than physical in nature, amounting to effects of withdrawal from having beast’s poisonous gifts so suddenly stripped. Be that as it may, as you reach the base, you are already met with perhaps a dozen sets of gazes, mercenary and liberated slaves alike, as some of those who were in good enough shape began to gather beneath the landmark of the ruins. Whether it was idea of one of your companions or something that came up spontaneously, it was as good a rally point as any. And for now it really seemed to be a focal point as the bizarre company came down – a pair of dark elves, an ogre champion and the former leader of the black dogs supported by his lover. On impulse, you begin to speak. You tell the gathered men and women of the new era that had dawned on the world, one distinctly free of the black dog cult as a fundamental force. That you would be leaving this place and what it represents behind for good and headed for the Cathedral city. That there is still work to be done. Some had quietly slinked out during your speech, but most heard it out with relief and a newfound hope. Some had then dispersed to spread the words, others asked for instruction what needed to be done – and they got those, mostly from Maia, who had on the occasion consulted Vult on one aspect of the camp’s layout or possible stockpiles. Ultimately you had gone on to make rounds of the ruins yourself, in company of Olga and Chloe, while Maia and Vult went in their own direction, and before long you settled into a routine that took you well into the evening, By the time the night fell, most if not all of the people who remained in the ruins of Atlassia were spread out around the clearing, refreshing themselves before the voyage or making preparation. Some were singing and dancing with joy around the bonfires, others have already gone to sleep. You found yourself among the latter, your closest companions having seized a patch of ground as an impromptu campsite, drifting off to a calming, hopeful, sentimental tune of Smutkin’s flute.

Did that mean she had truly left you behind? I will be with you, always. You’re not sure if that was a memory or a touch of the goddess, but it felt nice all the same. You supposed she did have a lot of work now, in fact it was difficult or outright impossible to judge the magnitude. Even so, your night was restful, and allowed you to spend the next day finalizing the preparations for the the crowd of people to embark on a journey. And indeed after plundering much of the available stocks of rations you had departed some time after midday, at the head of what remained of the reclaimers of Atlassia along with their captives and slaves. Tormented and tormentors, walking in the wake of you and your companions into the new era. This time you do not have the luxury of trance you had on your way here, instead you have boon of fair weather and clear horizon, and guides both among your companions and the former cultists. The journey goes slowly, but without incident, and with no dampening of the spirits, possibly at least partly in time thanks to Smutkin’s tunes carrying throughout the traveling throng. The miles shrink and vanish below your feet, as you approach your destination. And while you could not say much for destinations of most those who shared your journey, for you personally it was as clear cut and exact as it could be.

Celestine. With the quest fulfilled and new hope pouring into the world, you found yourself more and more eager to do your utmost to experience most of it in the high elven hierarch’s gentle smile, and the kind spark behind her emerald eyes. Your heart skipped a beat when you brought forth the memories you had made in her company, now examining them in new light. When you comforted her after she endured the Beast’s mental onslaught, when you shielded her from Kin’s vile black bolt, or when she bared her soul to her to propel you to your first meditative trances. The warmth of her grace and unconditional affection embraced you then, and how you longed to feel it embrace you again. Sometimes you were tempted to pick up the pace. By a lot. But… then you imagine her expression as she asked you whether you left your friends behind, her green orbs widened with surprise, disappointment and sadness. Until… “Go.” You blink. It was Olga. “I can see your eagerness to leave the world itself behind in your pursuit, my champion. Go. We can handle things, you can trust us with that. If someone would begrudge you, it’s not us, and I doubt it would be her. You can take my word for that.” You look around you, your gaze falling after one of your companions after another. Although you didn’t share your interest in Celestine with anyone else since talking to Olga and Chloe, you got a round of encouraging nods and smiles from all of them. “You can count on us, sir. If you’re in a hurry.” Elle says, giving no indication she knows what’s up. “If your heart urges you, you follow. That’s what you did then, feel free to do it again.” Smutkin notes, giving you a slightly more knowing glance. You keep yourself from shedding a tear at the smiles, instead you say: “Friends… thank you.” And then you are off.

With your mind on the goal, and your heart making your steps sprightly and buoyant, you feel the distance burn beneath your feet. The landscape scrolls by, and the sun falls below the horizon. You begin to wonder whether it is wise to continue under just guidance of the moonlight in this treacherous terrain. It wouldn’t do if in your hurry to confess your feelings you ended up drowning in the swamp. Fortunately, you are freed from your dilemma in a most auspicious manner. Just as you’re about to consider where to set up camp, a dark shape ahead of you resolves to a familiar sight – the sheltering grove that sprouted into existence under powers lent to you by Laurentia. The fragrance of roses welcomes you as you enter, and you respond to their invitation by placing yourself to rest in the same place you slept what felt like months ago. You fall into the lightless depths of the realm of dreams. For a moment you find yourself wondering if you’ve somehow made your way back to the shadowy realm between realms, but it feels different somehow. There was no pressure, just softness and warmth, like a comforting embrace. Soon. What? You’ll see. came back with a playful lilt. Before you could ask more, the embrace eased and your eyes fluttered open, the enchanted glade aglitter with dawn’s early light, quiet murmur of the spring and rustling of the leaves only disturbed by sound of an alicorn lapping at the fresh water in the pond. Wait, what?

The softness you felt around your head didn’t feel the same way your bedroll did, nor did its warmth. You looked up, and saw a pair of emerald green eyes shining back at you, and a small, gentle smile melting your heart. “Celestine, my love.” You speak, virtually certain that you were still dreaming. Pink blush colored her cheeks. “Mouse…” She said. “I… I don’t think I even knew how I longed to hear those words.” Softly like a falling feather, like a drop of dew, she bent forward, placing a kiss on your forehead. “Mouse…” Well, you were having none of that. You reach for the dream, grab her with your hands, eliciting a surprised yelp, and press the elf against you in an embrace. “Thank you for this dream. I couldn’t ask for a better gift.” You say. “D-dream?” You blink. Are you supposed to be able to blink in a dream? And this softness… it felt unlike any dream you recall, or any of your spiritual voyages. It felt… “Celestine, is that really you?” You ask, horror of your recent manoeuvre catching up with you. “Y-yes…” She says, surprise giving once again way to affection. “I’m sorry that I confused you…” “No, no no no! I’m sorry for, er…” She laughs. A bright and vibrant sound like… what bellflowers would probably make if they were actual bells as well as flowers. And then she says the words. “I love you.” This had to be dream. This couldn’t be a dream. This could not be anything else but a dream. And then she shifted in your stunned embrace, pulled closer and kissed you on your rough lips. The moment when her warmth joins yours in such intimate manner is something you didn’t know you could experience. And on some level you knew that it went beyond the act of physical intimacy. You could feel the radiance of her soul set your own alight, her proximity and display of affection made all the sweeter by her confession. You returned her embrace and her kiss, more gently now, carefully as if afraid that the reality might shatter, nevermind her slim elven frame. This was it. This was that you had sought. That which cannot be seized by force. And you wished the moment would never end.

Your lips did eventually part, and Celestine disentangled herself out of your embrace while you were busy processing the jumble of sensations and emotions. After a while you recovered enough of your faculties that you could begin to talk. “What happened? How did you come to be here? Not that I’m complaining.” She smiled at you before replying. “I have seen it. This place. In a vision.” She explained. “I simply knew that I had to come.” “Your powers?” “I know I’ve resolved to not use them as I’ve come to realize they were poisoned gifts.” Celestine explains. “But this has changed. When the Beast was struck down, we have all felt it, and also saw the effects. I was fighting alongside Alicia…” You listen to the elven lady recount to you how she and your human friends have struggled while you were journeying towards Atlassia. And indeed you confirm that the dream you’ve been shown while resting in this very grove was an event that had actually taken place, between the many pitched battles the human knights had waged against the possessed monstrous horde. You feel a chill run down your spine at the notion that the people you’ve come to consider your friends could have well perished far away while you were on your quest. Then again, presumably it was the same for them. Still, in the end it seemed the knights were capable of holding their own long enough. Even Celestine herself participated in the fight, wielding her powers of light both as searing blades of flame against the demonic hordes and in healing the wounded and fallen among the knights. And it was during one of the particularly vicious attacks that your and Maia’s confrontation with Vult and his master at the top of the Atlassian temple took place. When during subsequent face off against the beast itself the world was split open and mended, the effects on the possessed horde were immediate and dramatic. The demons would turn into dust, the corrupted orcs and ogres would drop dead and the rage of their incited peers would turn to panic as their ranks broke and their onslaught turned into rout. “Even without it, I could feel that the world had changed on that moment. That on that moment you had succeeded and the kindness had prevailed over cruelty. I have seen you, I have heard your voice and I have remembered a very particular encounter I had in the past, for a reason I had not at the time understood.” “So you decided to… travel here?” You ask, glancing briefly at a very tired looking falicorn that had laid itself in the grass next to the pond.

Mouse…” She looks at you, and you lose yourself in her gaze. “Celestine…” You manage eventually. “What happens next?” “I do not know. This world is going to be new for all of us. For myself, I suppose I will continue to serve as the servant and a guide and a conduit of mother’s grace. But…” She makes a pause. “I am certain now. Whatever form you possess. And I know that whatever this new world has in store for us – we are going to meet it… together.” She reaches out to you, taking your calloused hand in both of hers. She doesn’t make a question, but she looks at you pleadingly. You don’t have to think about an answer. You look into her eyes and you know for certain that this is the sight that you had always hoped to see. Beyond those emerald pools was a living sun of love eager to share itself with you. And you knew that you would do whatever you could to keep that flame ablaze. “Yes… together. Chloe. The shadow of the Queen, the half elf, the nimble and deadly retainer of your dark queen. In some ways, your rival. In truth, she attempted to kill you on dark queen’s command. How long ago that felt. In more ways than one – although truth be told, you did have a soft spot for her even back then. Her unflinching, sincere devotion to the dark queen was like a balm in the ruthless jungle of the dark citadel ranks and relations. And lethal - yet possessing that elfin delicateness - beauty of her finely sculpted body didn’t hurt, either. To some extent, as you admired your dark queen, perhaps you also felt a little bit of envy for Chloe’s affection. Then why did it take you so long to realize that, bit by bit, during your shared travels, you were earning something just as profound, or more so, from the queen’s shadow? You had noted, of course, with delight that Chloe had gradually come to align herself with the quest you’ve undertaken; a progress made all the more impressive in context of the suffering you’ve come to learn she had endured. As sweet as your memories of childhood were, hers were bitter and painful. Yet her inner light, the spark behind her crimson eyes you’ve come to treasure, grew ever stronger. You’ve come to rely on her keen eyes and sharp ears, but even more so on her stalwart heart. And now… ...now you were ready to name the feeling that swelled in your heart when you thought of the lithe half elven woman. Love. “I love you.” You speak those words as soon as you open your eyes, and see a pair of crimson orbs staring back widen in shock. “W-wa-wa….” She mutters. “WHAT?! NOW you tell me that?! You… you…. You dumb, hulking, lumbering, heavy footed oaf!” She pummels you with her dainty fists, a gesture clearly devoid of actual malice. “Ow, ow, ow, that hurts!” You moan theatrically, allowing a grin to spread on your face in response to the blushing girl above you. “Liar. Get up already. Are you hurt?” “She wasted no time in asking for my leave to abandon me, my champion. You are clearly a bad influence on my Shadow.” A haughty voice speaks with exaggerated intonation, causing you to scramble to regain your bearings beyond Chloe’s appealing silhouette standing defiantly next to you, her eyes fixated on you as she reprocessed your playful, if sincere, exchange.

You found yourself back in the material world, that much was clear, and more or less exactly where you could expect – at the summit of the ruined temple in the heart of Atlassia. The air was crisp and clear, as if after rain, though that could not have been the case as nothing about the dry cracked stones showed signs of humidity. The sky was overcast, but with rays of light raking the ground where the cloud cover was tearing up. Picking yourself up, your gaze naturally came to level with the still growing group of people arriving onto the stone platform, most keeping reverent distance – those were the penitent mercenaries – while others came closer, your older companions, your friends. Some of them were eyeing you as you gathered your bearings, but reassured that you were apparently alright, some were just as you taking in the sight of the surrounding, remodeled, reality – with notable exception of Smutkin whose gaze wandered to a different spot on the platform, a small, sentimental smile on the bard’s lips. Following his eyes you spot Maia hunched over Vult, the mercenary lord and cradling his head in her embrace. Judging by the movement, it seemed the man had survived the fight and was ready to accept Maia’s feelings. The notion warmed your heart somewhat. Even though he had plenty to atone for, hopefully he would make good on this chance the woman who loved him had earned for him. “It appears I owe you an apology, my champion.” Olga’s voice snaps your attention onto the dark queen as she stands before you, and you are reminded of how you had parted. “My queen, I’m glad you made it.” She smirks. “Of course I would, was there ever any doubt?” You only smile in answer, your gaze drifting back to the still blushing half elven knight. Your eyes meet, and you realize you haven’t seen her like that ever before. She is not wearing her confident smirk or her ruthless stony expression, her crimson eyes are looking back into yours and you can sense the confused, vulnerable, surprised and perhaps surprisingly caring woman behind. She is at loss of words. And it’s not just because her queen is standing right there. She’s staring back at you and genuinely doesn’t seem to be able to decide how to react to your attention. “Eyes up here, Mouse.” Olga says with a mock bemusement, and you remember yourself. “Please forgive me, my queen.” “Hah. I can see how it is going to be, then.” The statuesque dark elf woman says as you bow in apology for disregarding her. “Oh let’s drop the pretense. You’ve earned more than just a boon from me, my champion. I owe you a fate, and the rest of the world does, too.”

“I… don’t think I can accept credit of such magnitude.” You look up to see that the dark queen, although retaining her regal bearing, her smirk is less of a mask of condescension and more of an expression of kind and genuine amusement, and her amber eyes were alight with hope you have not seen in the dark queen before. “Of course you wouldn’t. Well, you’re not wrong. What just happened took much more than an enforcer’s arm, though I imagine it did help you on your way. No, even without intrinsic connection to the world’s soul that the… lady Celestine possesses, I can tell that something that transcends all of us has just taken place. Nonetheless, I also know better than to not recognize role you had played.” The queen falls silent for a moment, and her golden eyes shift for a brief moment onto Chloe who seemed to have gotten her blushing under control and was now wearing a carefully neutral expression. “Chloe, my shadow.” The half elf drops on her knee out of reflex at being addressed, finding shelter in the familiar dynamic. “My queen…” “Rise up.” Olga would have none of it this time, it seemed. “In recognition of your role in this quest, I bestow upon you freedom and release you from my service and from all oaths and vows.” Chloe blinks once, then again, and colour drains from her face to the point where you could have almost mistaken her for a peculiarly coloured regular elf. “W-what? My… my queen? Have- have I offended you?” She asked, humidity gathering in corners of her eyes. “Not at all, my dear.” The queen says, grimacing slightly with what you interpret as a hint of guilt. “I am now at precious liberty that I could never afford before to tell you that you were never just a retainer to me. I held you as a daughter I knew I’d never be able to raise, or a younger sister. It is for that reason that I want you to be able to find your happiness freely without being bound by your duties in capacity of my retainer.” Emotions swirled and clashed on Chloe’s face, a spectacle you never expected to see, and so dramatically that you were a bit worried she might faint. Once again though the half elven champion proves her mental fortitude as she steadies herself, her features settling into the neutral dutiful expression you’ve come to associate with her. “I… thank you, my queen?” She says uncertainly. “You know that my loyalty to you goes beyond any oath or service.” “I’m pleased to hear that. Nevertheless, I did not want your sense of duty to keep you from following your heart.” Chloe blinks, as if she’d realized something for the first time, and the blush returns.

Whether it was to spare her from whatever response she may have come up with the dark queen turns back to you. “My boon for you is much the same. You are free, my champion, to pursue whichever path you deem most appropriate. However, in the light of your role in changing the world itself at my behest, I’d much appreciate it if your steps took you to my domain where you could assist me in making most of the pathways of fate you’ve helped open.” As haughtily as Olga seemed to have delivered her request, you thought you understood what she was after. By releasing you from her service in this manner she was hoping to give you some sort of recognition while requesting you to put it to use for benefit of her realm. Although you couldn’t tell whether the gesture would have a pronounced effect on the audience, which currently consisted of your own companions and the penitent mercenaries – you were unsure if Vult and Maia were paying attention to anything but each other right now – you were rather sure that she needn’t have bothered. As appreciative as you were of the relations you’ve built with your human friends, you had little intention of going anywhere else but back to the dark citadel… …after all, you had little doubt that that’s where Chloe would want to go. And you felt certain now, that your mission concluded, you would make your next goal to be that of a smile of a particular person. And that person was Chloe. “Thank you for your boon, lady Olga.” You said, accepting what she was offering. Even then, you felt your eyes slide sideways, where the half-elven champion was still figuring out where the events were going. “I’ll make the most of it, I promise.” Your eyes meet. She blinks. You feel your heart skip a beat at her expression, even though in this case it’s not a smile, or an outspoken longing, no. Right now it’s just a look into eyes of someone sorting her feelings, earnestly, sincerely, without deception or subterfuge. She blinks again and the moment passes. She recovers once more her neutral expression. But a flicker of light you captured in that precious moment, you would hold onto that. For now, though, the time was advancing, and there were many more around who were still looking to adapt to the change of the world. Some of them, you realize with a renewed sense of urgency, possibly bound or wounded.

The world is different now that it was before. No longer are we bound by the cruel will of the Beast’s corruption – we are free to choose a different path.” You make a pause, searching for the words yourself, but are reminded you’ve already lost enough time. “…and we can embark that right now, by going down there to help those who feel sudden loss and confusion, and especially those who just found a new hope.” You finish and gesture towards the stairs down. The quest may have concluded, but as long as the universe itself went on, there would always be work to be done. There’s no cheering, just a variety of acknowledging nods. You figure there may have been some cheering back when you were out of it. Perhaps even when you woke up and was looked back at Chloe as she was viewing you with concern. But it was just as well. There would be time to celebrate later, you figure. You would still have to escort all these people to the human lands, you figure lady Celestine would want to have a celebration… and from there there was still ways to go to the dark citadel. Your home. Or was it? Your gaze wanders to Chloe as you descend from the ruined temple of the defeated evil. Chloe catches your gaze… and smiles.

Rest of the day passes by in a haze. You remember the smiles – they all warm your heart, be they smiles of the unchained slaves, your companions jubilant at the triumph you shared, or even those among the mercenaries who have chosen repentance over trying to slink away into the dark. But among them all, even next to radiant cheer offered by Sparky as he flies around the ruins, healing wounded and cheering up the confused, the most special to you belongs to a particular half-elven knight. As the night falls and the exhaustion comes together with Tithe’s announcements that all people remaining in the ruins of Atlassia have been accounted for, you retire to the section of the newly reformed camp dedicated to your companions. Next day you would, if possible, conclude organizing the group and embark on the journey back to the civilization, hopefully to meet rest of your friends again… and to face your future. Your future… What would be your future? It was only yours to decide now. It was impossible to grasp all the possibilities now open before you. Still, some felt more natural than others. And even then, there’s only a select few of them you cared to ponder as your thoughts veered invariably towards one particular individual. “Chloe…” You speak basically unconsciously, the name a hymn of victory on your lips. “Hm?” Comes the response, startling you. You blink and focus your eyes, having expected to already be dreaming. Perhaps you were. It was rather pleasant as dreams went, the lithe elf standing in a pose that was both relaxed and confident before you, her caramel coloured skin glistening in the light of stars, moon and campfires, crimson orbs of her eyes looking at you expectantly. “I just like the sound of your name.” You say. She frowns a little in confusion. “Do you think this is time to be fooling around?” She asks. “I guess, it’s not like you have something urgent to do…” “I have the most urgent thing of them all, Chloe.” You can’t stop yourself. Is it some sort of madness? You never talked to her like that. What if that voice you heard was just an illusion? Just a figment of your wishful thinking? But it was stronger than your sense. “I have you. I love you, Chloe.” You reach out for her hand. “T-t-that again?” She jumps back. “T-that’s not funny, Mouse! In fact it’s downright cruel! Just because… just because… because I came to trust you…” She backs again and a fear grips your heart. You know what she’s been through, or at least have an idea. Have you been too direct? Have you struck her wound? If she would turn and flee now you would not see her again unless she willed it. The notion of not seeing her again, her eyes or her smile, filled you with terror you don’t remember knowing.

How farcical would it be to have participated in saving the world, only to in the next moment fumble and lose what is most precious within it? You almost consider turning to goddess. [i:lit]Nu-uh, this is between you and her. Making her change her mind would go against my role here.[/i:lit] That’s not what you’d want anyway. Luckily, it doesn’t take that much. “…you’re serious?” Chloe asks. “You… really mean it?” “I do.” You answer with no room for doubt or hesitation. “Among all those looking up to you… you’d want me? Even knowing… knowing…” She falters. “I do. I love you.” You repeat. “There is nobody else I’d want in my life more than you.” You say. “The idea that you’d take what I said as a cruel joke that would make you leave… it filled me with fear I had not felt… in a long time, if ever.” Chloe’s expression, still vulnerable and wary, softens, and you feel your heart soar as she pronounces your name. “…Mouse…” This time you don’t reach for her, but you do raise your hands towards her, palms up. She takes a step… and then… She [i:lit]leaps[/i:lit] at you, force of impact surprising you and knocking you over on your back. “Mouse!” She presses herself against you and embraces you with strength that surprises you even knowing how much energy her slim frame must hold to pull off the manoeuvres you know she is capable of. “I… I… I’m not sure if… if I can believe in…” She tries to say something, but she breaks down sobbing every time she tries. You don’t mind. Sensation of her heart beating next to yours is enough to tell what she feels. You reciprocate her embrace, and the two of you share the moment until the sleep takes you both. You sleep easily, and dreamlessly, that night. Or perhaps that is not entirely accurate. In truth, you may have begun living the dream that night.

When you awoke, the comforting weight of the cuddly half elf was gone. Before you could panic, though, you spotted her next to you, sitting cross legged, facing away from you, taking up some of the light entering your tent through an open flap. You began to pick yourself up, and the noise prompted her to turn around. “Good morning, Mouse.” She said, and in the movement, aside from a good view of her silhouette framed by the morning light, you spotted what she has been occupied with. It was the book. You felt your expression droop at the recognition. “Hm? Oh.” Chloe’s expression grew more solemn as she saw your reaction. “You don’t need to worry. I’ve had some time to… process.” Oddly enough, you have no problem believe her as she speaks. Somehow you can tell that her current serenity is not a mask. She looked genuinely at peace. She closed the book and put it away. “I’ve been thinking.” She explains, her crimson gaze meeting yours. “I’m up for some time you know. Elves don’t need to sleep that much.” You were unsure how to proceed. One question surfaced, though, and you couldn’t bring yourself not to ask it. “You were reading that book…” “Of course. That’s why I brought it with me.” She said. Then, seeing that you’re not satisfied with that reply but are unsure how to probe further, she goes on. “I feel differently about it that I did previously.” “What changed? You wanted to track down the monsters writing it.” “I still do. But…” She makes a pause, not out of hesitation, but rather as she was looking for words to describe the shift. “At first, I wanted to track them down just to inflict painful death on each of them.” “And…?” You ask. “You no longer…” “Oh, I still want to see them pay. And grovel.” She says, and some edge returns to her voice. “But… I’m no longer sure I’m going to slaughter all of them… if they grovel sincerely enough.” You blink in surprise. “What brought that on?” “Traveling with you.” She gives you a weak smile. “But what stands out… when that woman, Hilde, offered her forgiveness. That moment stuck with me for a while… and now, I’ve been thinking…” She trails off. “What did you come up with?” “I… I think I was wrong.”

I had convinced myself that it was just a lie perpetuated by the hypocritical humans. Followers of the goddess…” She falls silent. “Even when seeing an evidence to the contrary, I felt sure it was a fluke. But I think… I was wrong. And… I’m glad that you helped me realize that. "What do I have left to live for? What do you even know?" The cries of the woman do not fall on deaf ears. If anything, Janet felt his heart sting at the sincere pain she was expressing, and also to some extent to the accusation. He and his sister heard it many times now, over the course of the two years that had passed since the Mending, as the moment when the darkness shattered and the wounds it left filled with light. Since the conclusion of lord Mouse's quest, and since the day lady Celestine had bestowed her blessings on the mission he and Harriet would take upon themselves, after they spent a night in the ruins talking about what shape the new world would be taking. On that night, the two had not as much decided as they've reaffirmed each other, that they would continue to work, together, to ensure that the forces of darkness would find no purchase in the lands that follow the light of the goddess. Much as neither Janet nor Harriet will ever forget the horrors of that fateful missions when they witnessed gruesome end of two of their friends and the despair and helplessness that followed, much like they will never forget the hope given to them in the unlikely form of lord Mouse's quest, neither will they forget the day when lady Celestine, moved by their request, officiated creation of the Order of the Rangers, with the twins as their founders. Since that day the two young scouts have been traversing the land, from the Levantine fort in the north to the Goldvale trading hub in the south, from the gradually reconstructed Arcturus fort to the Dawnport in the east, delivering the word of the goddess's justice, and where gods were not adequate, also steel. They were not alone. Although the order was new, there were already those who were eager to join, among them those who had joined lord Mouse's cause, as a ways of atoning for their past crimes under the black dog banner.

Janet was slightly more apprehensive of their company than Harriet was, but over time felt his concerns eased more often than validated. It helped that on some of the missions they were joined with other familiar faces - be it her highness Kaguya, her retainer Hayato and sir Phineous on their trip to the east, or sir Smutkin on his journey to the west, or lady Elle when her route coincided with theirs. In fact, Elle was apparently tempted to join the order as well, but as she confided in the twins one day, it would feel wrong for such a role to interfere with the oath of service she'd sworn to lord Mouse. In any case, despite the world having been fundamentally remade, there seemed to be no shortage of work for the newly founded order as they sought out hidden slaver rings and bandit enclaves throughout the land under Celestine's authority - they were not yet legally allowed to confront the slavers' guild in the Alliance heartland, though with the universal shift being felt across all layers of the society, there was no doubt that the time would come when those who had embraced what passed for the beast's ethos would no longer be able to hide behind inertia of the bureaucratic leviathan. For now, though, the twins and their companions had no shortage of work. Work that took a lot of focus and effort, and offered considerable amounts of pain. The twins have come to increasingly appreciate how torturous pain and despair can be even when it is only seen in eyes of another. "I have thought as you do." Janet says. "Fortunately for me, there was someone to tell - no, [i:lit]show[/i:lit] me, that even in a near absolute darkness, there is always a flicker of light, a spark of hope, that you can nurture and shelter." "Easy for you to say..." The woman sobs. Janet was trying to help this one while Harriet was tending to another who was in even worse shape. "It feels like it would be, doesn't it?" The young man says wistfully. "It may sound hollow to you now - I know it did for me - but my... my very good friend, once told me this - it's never over as long as you draw breath." The woman gives Janet a look, perhaps originally intended as dubious. But as their eyes meet, her lips end up curling in a small smile. There's not much mirth in it, if any. But there is a fragment of what Janet yearned to see - a barest hint of hope.

She was one of few young knights who have volunteered to join the order. "Sir Janet? The wagon has arrived." After all this time it still felt a bit weird for the twins to be addressed with deference by the nobles. But seeing as it allowed to carry out their mission better, and that was important. "Thank you, lady Scarlet." The young man turned to the rescued woman and offered her his hand. It took a few moments of hesitation, but Janet waited patiently, and eventually the woman took it. He lifted her, and supported her as he made way through the bandit lair, joined soon by his sister as she likewise supported another liberated captive, as they passed over bodies of those who decided to follow the path of the beast to its bitter end. Later, once the wagon carrying the liberated captives has departed for the city where they would require all the help they needed to reclaim their lives, Janet and Harriet gave the now defunct bandit camp one last look. "All in a day's work." Harriet commented. "Quite..." Janet nodded. "You're troubled." The sister noted. "That's right. I still find it difficult to reconcile... before Mending, these people had the excuse. It was a flimsy one, but still..." "And yet..." The young woman nodded, seeing where her twin brother was going. "Why does someone, given freedom, choose it to inflict cruelty to another?" "You've seen as much as I have, bro..." She shakes her head. "Most we can do is continue what we are doing." "Right. To help those who would have the choice made for them." The two rangers exchange trade looks. In face of his sister's eager look, he can't hold onto the bleak thoughts. "Alright. Let's go." Janet says eventually. "Onwards, to adventure?" Harriet asks teasingly. "I was thinking headquarters, to see if more reports have come in..." "I'm sure miss Willows will have a summary ready to recite to you." Harriet says referring to the auburn-haired young clerk who had joined the order as a civilian worker, and with a grin prods her mount to depart. "Yeah... wait, what do you mean, 'you'? I-it's not like-" Janet begins as he moves to catch up with his sister, the siblings riding into the sunset together. >>6120458 >>6120491 The boy was originally going to abandon himself to the calling of the Beast. He would usurp the emperor and enact a rule even more brutal than that of his father that would have ultimately led to infighting, betrayal, bloodshed and fall of Atlassia and rise of the order Mouse had walked in on.
What happened instead following Mouse's intervention is that the brief moment when light of past and present had met had led to the two being shaken to the point where they interrupted the fight, were able to reconcile and see a brief surge in earnest renunciation of the beast that eventually led to fall of Atlassia along a different, less brutal route, though with outcomes in longer term more or less equivalent - at least in the "less intrusive" world reformatting that saw Mouse return to the world more or less as he remembered it.
And now, for Olga's variant.

Olga Discordia, the dark queen. Your queen. Your love. The revelation strikes you as a surprise, even though it really shouldn't. You already knew that you owed her your life. You already committed yourself to her service. But perhaps only now, that your quest has come to a conclusion, perhaps only now you allowed yourself to admit what you had already felt - that the swell of emotions you felt when you thought of your queen was not just an understandable bout of lust for her exotic, feminine body, but also a yearning of your heart. To see her smile. To see her shed the mask she needed to wear to retain her authority and control - and her life - in the merciless aggregation of monsters that had consisted her domain. Or at least previously they had. Right now, she had only yourself and Chloe. Which made you all the more resolved to take her form into your arms and shelter her as something precious. But there was more still. You desired to look into her amber coloured eyes and see the treasure beyond them, her hidden heart that made her take in yourself as well as Chloe, that had her acquiesce to your daring mission, that saw her join you in the very final part of it... and that compelled her to be ultimately willing confront the dark powers on her own, even as you headed off to confront Vult. Your eyes snap open. The mercenary leader has renounced the darkness, and the goddess Laurentia threw herself into the world's wounds to mend them with her light. You had won, and the Beast was defeated. But what happened to Olga?

You rise to your feet and let your senses take in the changed world. It's an eerie landscape, and even though you didn't really have a chance to observe it in its previous state - nothing of value was lost, you're sure - you could tell exactly the nature of the otherworldly changes as you gazed down from the platform onto the jungle as it was lit by curtains of light that was beginning to pour from rifts in the breaking cloud cover, listening the discordant chorus of voices expressing a variety of emotions at the sudden, inexplicable change in atmosphere as the captors were stricken with strange anxiety, the captives with sense of hope and peace and mutated abominations with an abrupt withdrawal or death. In closer proximity, you could hear subdued, intimate sobs shared between Maia and the man she put her life on the line for - and saw him pulled from the depths from which few would expect there to be return. It was more than a little reassuring - assuming it would stick. On the other side, your companions, until recently locked in an intense, climactic battle, emerged onto the platform, looking around, unsure what to expect. All were accounted for, you noted, except for queen Olga and those who went to accompany her. Natural, you knew, it would only make sense for them to take longer to join you as they were further away. Right? Still, you didn't have to like it. You walked towards where your companions were arriving, offering them content, celebratory smile in recognition of the victory and their role in it. But still, some uncertainty lingered that didn't allow you to wholly appreciate the reverent gazes, cheers, or even exceptionally overjoyed exclamations of Sparky. And it probably showed, as nobody questioned you as you walked past the incoming friends and companions to take a better view of the temple approach.

She was there. Your gaze fell on the regal, elegant, pronouncedly female figure gracefully climbing the stairs, her ever loyal retainer at one side and your oldest monstrous friend on the other. You didn't see the penitent volunteers, but something told you they were fine, just put to work somewhere they were needed. In either case, and to a small measure of shame at this feeling, you cared relatively little for anything else when your eyes met the golden orbs of queen Olga. She didn't pick up speed, nor did you run down to meet her. Still, you're not sure where the time went between the moment you first saw her and the moment she stood before you, returning your gaze, her expression a regal mask of confidence and grace. "Mouse. You were successful in your quest." "I had a lot of help. Beyond that of a mortal world, even." You answer. Then, you add. "But I'd have none of that had you not saved my life, and then allowed me to pursue it." Whatever she had expected from your reaction, you seemed to surprise her. Although perhaps it was not just the words, which as you knew only stated the obvious facts, but perhaps the way you spoke them, or perhaps the way how you allowed yourself to drown in the golden glow of her irises, yearning to find in them confirmation of the ghost of a feeling that has been with you throughout this moment since you've came to senses... since the world was changed. Since you dared to admit that yes, you indeed do consider your queen something more than a monarch, something more than a beautiful elven woman. But rather as a woman you would want to intertwine your fate with, for better or worse, for the rest of your days. "That... is so..." She says slowly, as if something caused her to delay processing your words. "Nevertheless... my champion, I desire... to recognize your efforts, and your valiance in my service. You are more than deserving of a boon. So speak. What do you desire, my champion?" You're not sure what she expects you to say here. Freedom, perhaps? To leave the dark citadel behind and try your hand among the society of humans? You're quite sure she knows you more than to expect you to ask for power or riches, none of which she'd be in position to give until she's reclaimed her throne anyway. Not that it mattered. You'd have helped her with that regardless. In truth, however, you knew what you wanted, and you suspected, or perhaps just hoped, that she knew and felt similarly. "You."

Her yes widen. "What." "There is nothing in this world I desire other than yourself, my queen." You speak, and the words seem to flow naturally, so certain you are of them. "I love you, Olga." There is a moment of stunned silence. If you were paying attention to anything else than Olga's mask of an expression cracking as her eyes attempted to gaze into your soul, you may have noticed quite a diverse array of expression among your other companions, from similarly stunned surprise from Chloe, various smiles and expressions of awe from the penitents, earnest smiles from Elle and Sparky, mysterious one from Smutkin and Phineous furtively scrambling for his sketchbook. But, you are not paying particular care to any of that. What you do watch is the inner struggle of the dark skinned elven beauty, ever as she maintains her impeccably regal pose, you can see - or perhaps delude yourself into seeing - surprise, relief, affection, anxiety, horror, defiance, incredulity, longing, embarrassment, outrage - and love. [i:lit]That is no delusion. Her heart and yours already pine for each other. I can tell you that much.[/i:lit] You want to believe. But you know that the only one who can give you the definite answer is the woman standing before you. "Do you have any idea what you are asking?" The dark queen asks, the tone of her voice painstakingly level with a touch of haughty. "Hand, and heart, of the woman I love." You respond reflexively. You don't have to think about it, which is probably a good thing, or else you would have stumbled on words under her gaze. She hesitates, or at least, withholds answer, for a few moments that feel like an eternity to you. Admittedly, it's not an altogether unpleasant one as you get to watch your queen's bosom rise and fall, and her gaze monopolize yours, as she struggles to balance her airs of dominance with the effort to navigate the question you've laid before her. It was a simple question, and the answer should not have required that much thinking, if any, you feel. But that, too, was something she needed to arrive by herself. Or, perhaps, with a little prod. "I love you, Olga." You repeat. "I think I've always loved you, but only now... only now do I feel that perhaps, just perhaps..." You trail off, unsure how to bring your point across... or whether anything more would even be necessary. You said what you needed to say. And so the only thing between you is a distance. Distance that begins to shorten. Olga, having made a choice as evidenced by her expression, and her gaze, having relaxed somewhat, takes the few steps to you and reaches up at your cheek, caressing the rough ogre skin with her delicate elfin fingers. It was a gesture that must have been alien for her at least for decades. This was truly a novel experience for her, and in a different way, for you. She whispers something. You lean in. She whispers again. This time you hear correctly. "Kiss me, you fool." You obey your queen.

When your lips part, you're still carrying the elven queen in your arms, and you are looking at each other from distance that allows you to still taste her breath. She is the one to break the silence. "Do what you do best. Bring everyone home." She tells you, then delicately rests her head against your chest. And finally you are brought from your personal point of bliss back into the real world. You look around at the gazes of your companions, kind, awed or both, but in any case echoing the sentiment that a good end has been reached here in more ways than one. And you speak up, as her majesty suggested. "Let's move. There is still work to be done. And... thank you, my friends. It is thanks to all of you... that from now onwards, days will no longer be as cruel, unless we will them to." You make a pause, deciding how to end, and ultimately settle for: "Let's all go home." And you proceed onwards and downwards, carrying your queen and letting your companions fall in behind you. There is indeed much to be done - scour the camp to find all those who need help and ensure none of those who choose malice despite all that happened would find no opposition in doing so. It was also necessary to organize everyone for the long walk home, so that this place would once again find peace. You would see all that done. But for now, you were content. What you had desired most in this world was already, literally, in your arms, and you felt her warmth and softness with every further step. Once you reached the base of the temple and the group began to divvy up to cover all the ground in what remained of daylight you had to reluctantly put Olga down. Fortunately she would accompany you throughout the day, and you would see her wield magic - with effort, and not with such ease as you've seen Celestine do, but you found yourself impressed as she reached out to the powers of the light to assist with healing, earning her the moniker of the redeemed queen. You could swear she allowed herself to smile a little bit at that. Eventually, as the activity winded down and the impromptu camp at the base of the temple grew, you retired for the night's rest into a tent. Your companions insisted that you take a particularly large and fancy one that Chloe had insisted was fitted to her majesty's preferences. Olga seemed to vindicate that assertion, and so you had relented, despite mixed feelings you felt on realization that much of those items must have been ransacked from Vult's officers' and had been party to all sorts of depravity. Olga, however, didn't seem to mind, and so you ultimately sidelined such concerns in favour of her happiness. "Are you displeased with me, my queen?" You ask. She gives you a quizzical look. "After you've delivered upon me humiliation that would see one or both of us dead by the dawn in the black citadel?" She asks with her eyebrow raised.

"Mouse. I'm ecstatic. I'm happy. That's something I never in my life expected to be say and believe it." "My-" "Call me 'my queen' again and I'm going to slap you." She looks you in the eye. "So don't do that unless you want to see me hurt." She adds with a smirk and you feel your head spin a little bit as you take in her behaviour. It's... not at all like what you remember, yet you sense no falsity in it. It seems that for the first time in her life, she feels comfortable expressing herself freely. "My- my love...?" "Much better. Although I liked it more when you put more spirit in it before." "I'll work on it, my love..." You say, feeling yourself relaxing. "So... what comes next for us?" You realize you hadn't really planned for this. The words you needed to say were already said, and seeing Olga so at ease made your heart flutter, you realized that your declaration, and your now recognized bond, was going to change things. "You are asking me this, King of the North?" She raised her eyebrows at you. "You know that no matter what happened, the monstrous races are still going to revere strength above all. You had triumphed over an enemy that made them overthrow me, therefore once they see us together, they will defer to you. With those pretty words of yours, you've effectively usurped me." "Olga..." "Don't you dare apologize." She put her finger on your lips. "I could not have hoped for a better outcome. And whether or not you realize that, I have you to thank for opening my eyes to it." She says. "On top of everything else I can now freely indulge in, my beloved." She looks at you with a look that leaves no place for argument. Or sapient thought in general. Alicia Arcturus. The first of the princess knights you've met, and the first one among them whose trust you have one. Admittedly, good word from Elle and Anna helped a lot, as did the circumstance of having been there to help save Prim. Then again, that too speaks to the noble ladyknight's credit - that while retaining her vigilance, she did not allow her principles to blind her against the light of hope, and ultimately recognized you as her friend. And, you find yourself hoping, perhaps more than that. And the more you think on it, the more you reminisce about your interactions, and the range of feelings and stances her violet eyes have conveyed... from righteous wrath against the traitors and the cruel to tender affection towards her cousin or her friends; from defiant confidence of her martial stance to innocent joy when she was discussing shopping for pastries. Your heart wanted more. Admittedly so did other parts of you as you recalled the synthesis of grace and strength her body represented, striking a balance between stature of a valiant knight and softness of a beautiful woman. Even so, you've met many beautiful women during your adventure, but only one Alicia. Even as you acknowledged all the virtues of your other companions, somehow you kept inexplicably drawn to Alicia's noble soul. The final words you've shared come forth to the forefront of your memory. [i:lit]She likes me...[/i:lit] Was that the extent of she felt, or what she felt ready to say? Was the voice you just heard only a dream, or your own secret desire? You had to know. You would ask her. And you would tell her how you feel. But first, you have to go back...

As you return to the waking world, you emerge into an eerie, portentous kind of daylight. The layer of clouds above was breaking, and sunbeams were raking the overgrown ruins around you with their golden talons. The ruins responded with a chaotic chorus, as the many souls came to terms that the world has changed this day, some with joy, some with regret, some with fear... There was also something much closer, a sound of subdued sobbing. You turn around to spot where the mercenary princess held close the man she had set out to save - and, hopefully, succeeded. And then, from the other side of the platform, your companions began to emerge, each jubilant according to their own nature, with Sparky being without a doubt the most lively. You couldn't see Chloe, Olga and Phineous, but you knew in your heart that they made it as well. Today was a good day. Nonetheless, you now knew what was missing for it to be perfect. Part of you urged you to drop everything and head west, without rest of sleep, until you could share with the fair haired princess knight your feelings for her. But then again, as you look around, you recognize that there is much to be done. And Alicia would probably not have liked it if she learned you've neglected those in need of assistance, or at best she'd have mixed feelings on the matter. And besides, especially resting your gaze at the innocent enthusiasm of Sparky as he darted around in joy, you'd end up feeling guilty as well. And so you speak up, say a few words of gratitude and recognition to the companions who have been with you through it all - sure enough, Olga and those who accompanied her join you as you speak, allowing you to conclude by outlining your intention to scour the ruins and escort those who so desire back to the land under Celestine's authority so that the imprisoned slaves could return to their homes, and the repenting cultists and mercenaries would be able to embark on the path of atonement. So decided, your company descends from the ruined temple, and over the course of the next day the ruins of Atlassia settle into a different rhythm that they had known in a long time, if ever. One of honesty and hope. You put yourself to work, setting your new goal aside as a reward to work towards. It feels almost wrong at times, as this sense of something missing seems to keep you from fully appreciating the magnitude of triumph you just took part in. And as much as you put a conscious effort to return the enthusiastic, hopeful smiles others beam at you, your closest companions invariably recognize that something is off.

"Looking forward to meeting someone in particular?" Smutkin asks nonchalantly as the host trudges through the wetlands, Chloe, Scouts and Elle and some of the penitents scouring the land ahead, although going by the sunlight conspicuously following you makes you confident that the terrain is not going to claim any soul on this journey. "You know me well, my friend." You nod. Then, after a moment's consideration, you add: "Alicia. Lady Alicia." The bard smiles and nods sagely. "The noble knightess. Among all the princess knights, she is the one who is recognized to embody purest of both of her monikers - refined princess, and a valiant knight." "That's her alright." You nod. Smutkin pats your shoulder reassuringly. "If my read on her is correct, she is going to be as eager to see you as you are." "Does it show that much?" "Don't worry, leader, I don't think anyone would blame you. And I think those who haven't been with you for long simply view you as being in some religious trance." "Heh." You chuckle. Feeling a bit more at ease after sharing your yearnings with Smutkin, you let your mind wander as you travel, imagining how you'd approach the princess. As friendly as she came to be with you, you figured she would appreciate some form or protocol. Or perhaps you were overthinking it? You just know that had she been around when you realized it's her your heart belonged to, you'd simply blurt it out. But now... now you find yourself wondering. "Smutkin, do you have any knowledge on... human courting?" The bard, still traveling next to you, shakes his head. "Not much, I'm afraid. I'm familiar with some stories, but most of them..." He trails off. "Let's just say I hope to write some new ones. In fact, I'd like to record your efforts, if you'd allow it." "Uh." You're not sure how to feel about that, but eventually you acquiesce. "Alright." "Thanks, sir. Break a leg. Looking forward to it." The bard grins at you. Somehow, you do in fact find it reassuring.

The welcome you receive as you enter the Cathedral City is nothing short of grandiose. It was the day before you reached the city that a courier - who turned out to be none other than Robert, Elle's friend, which made for a warm and merry reunion. Nevertheless, the man was under orders to plan the details of the arrival, as the church had a welcome ceremony planned out, authorized by Lady Celestine herself, that would segue into a feast after which the refugees would be interviewed and assisted by the cathedral city clerks. You did not fail to ask whether Alicia would be in attendance, in the process learning that all of the princess knights would be. And so you had something to look forward to as eventually the time came for you to enter the city. There was much cheering, and the streets were lit by smile and flowers as you navigated the arranged course towards the same squere where Celestine held her sermon what felt like eternity ago. It was... a strange feeling, to be welcomed like that, and you could say that Olga and Chloe were as surprised as they were on edge from all the attention, even though they both retained their composure as they too were celebrated as returning heroes. At long last you made it before the temple terrace. And that is where your eyes met her violet gaze, after a while, but in a very new context. Part of your consciousness took in the kind and hopeful words delivered by Celestine, but you knew that your heart kept darting towards the human princess who stood nearby. And she noticed that as well. You and her both kept on serious expression, maintaining a measure of tension. It was only as the follow up feast turned into full swing that you found way to extricate yourself and ask Alicia to meet you off to the side. Waiting for her in an alcove, you got to review the formal turns of phrases that you could use to tell her how you feel about her, and about your intention to court her. They all fall apart, pop like a bubble in the wind, when Alicia comes in and asks innocently. "Mouse, you wanted to talk in private? Is something the matter?" You had already exchanged some pleasantries during the formal welcome. Now, though, you had hoped to talk more freely. Only to find you were not sure what to say, as the princess stood there in her characteristic royal garments, her lavender eyes looking at you expectantly. "Nothing bad... I should hope." You say eventually. "I just... I wanted to be with you." She blushes. "I-is that so..." She says, looking unsure what to say. It looked like you'd have to just let it all out. "Alicia, I love you." You exhale. "I want to be with you, now and forever." She blinks.

She blinks again. You begin to wonder if she's not in danger of fainting. But after all she is more resilient than that, it just takes a while to process what you said. "Y-you do?" She asks, her cheeks radiantly flushed. "I-I mean, I-I..." She looks to the side. For an awkward moment she is quiet, but then something gives and in the next moment the princess is upon you. "Mouse!" She sobs. "I... I can't believe it. I thought- I was sure- I didn't-" For a while she's unconsolable, even as you delicately reciprocate her embrace. It... feels good. To have her near you, hold her in your arms. From proximity of the beautiful princess knight, of course, but perhaps more so from the warmth, and lively sincerity of her embrace as she hugs you tight (as much as she can given your size difference). "Alicia..." You find yourself saying her name. For one reason or another this gets her to stop momentarily. She draws back, her well watered violet eyes locking onto yours. "Mouse..." She gulps. "I love you too. Thank you... thank you for... for allowing me to say this. I didn't... I didn't even hope..." And she was back to resting against you. And you are satisfied to stay like that. You're not sure how long it takes. Nobody disturbs you, whether because nobody thinks to look for you, or perhaps because someone, like a very feminine elf passing by outside some time ago, specifically requested that you be given privacy, guarded by a pair of statuesque guardians, you cannot tell. Eventually, Alicia gets her emotions under control. "I'm sorry. I don't... no, that would be a lie. I know exactly what overcame me. Mouse..." Alicia says when she feels composed enough. "Highness..." "Now I'm highness again?" She smirks. "No, it'll always be Alicia from now on for you." "How about 'darling'?" The blush on her face goes really well with the colour of her eyes, you think. "Yes." She says. "Yes... that is how it's going to be." Her expression hardens. "I shall wed you, and I shall bear your children, and if any of my peers have a problem with any of that then they have another thing commmmph-mmmm-..." Rest of her assertion is silenced, and her expression shifts dramatically from righteous resolve to wide eyed surprise into a peaceful, contented smile. She does so as something primal stirs in you, you bring her face to yours and your embrace turns into a kiss. When you separate, there is no more need for words. You can see it in each other's eyes. No more intimacy between you takes place that day. But from that day and until Celestine herself officiates the ceremony, there is a lot of handholding. "...and they lived happily ever after. The end." With a satisfied smile, Claudia put the quill away and dried the ink on the page. It did not feel quite as satisfying as a good bout, especially not one her husband sometimes insisted they have by ways of him staying fit. Goddess knows these end up quite intense, also after the actual sparring has ended. They stopped doing these as her belly became notable... again. She couldn't feel upset about that, though. Tenderly she caressed where she felt a new heart take form. Clement was already addressing her and Klaus as "Mama" and "Papa". You hoped - no, you were sure he'd get along with new sibling. Or siblings? Her smile widened, as she recalled last time she saw those two, Harriet and Janet, stop by as they hurried by on their mission. They were so sweet as they interacted with each other. Especially considering... She shook her head to chase away the thoughts as they began to head towards a darker path. That was in the past, different times, different world, one she would never not be thankful to the goddess and her extremely unlikely champion in overthrowing. A soft breeze shakes her out of her reverie and she looks longingly towards entrance to the tent - but there was no one there. It really was just the wind. She looked elsewhere, to their temporary bedchamber, and a soft bed in which their son was peacefully sleeping (a non-trivial effort, that). Claudia frowned. That simply wouldn't do. Having come to a decision she stood up, put out the lamp and strode out of the tent, the notion of leaving the child out of line of sight tugging at her heart, though luckily she didn't need to go out of earshot. The command tent was right next to their personal one, and sure enough the flicker of lamplight could be seen within, casting a familiar form hunched over the large table. The matronly princess shoved the entry flap aside and took a firm stand facing Klaus as he stared intently onto a stack of papers with schematics and numbers.

Klaus didn't move a muscle. For a moment Claudia's expression softened, wondering if he perhaps froze up, perhaps out of fear of her ire, but quickly realized that he simply hadn't noticed her walk in and her righteous wrath reignited. "Ahem!" Now the young lord blinked. And then his attention snapped to his wife. "Love?" He asked. Then he looked around. "Oh, it's gotten late... I was sure I have a couple of minutes until sundown..." He trailed off. "Also, you're not actually supposed to pronounce that, I think." Her expression softened. She couldn't stay upset with him for long. "Sun went down a hour and a half ago." She told him. "Give it a rest. Sunlight is better for work. Now is the time for us to rest... together." She shifted her pose to emphasize that last point. For once, a small smile and a blush showed he did not miss the hint. "Of course. Of course, my love." Klaus takes the pile of papers and quickly arranges them into two distinct neat piles. "I'm sorry. I felt I really needed to check the math again." "Isn't that what you said yesterday, and the day before?" "I have, and it's still the case. This is a pivotal moment for the project, if we make a mistake now, it's going to be a very expensive one. Not just in terms of material and labour, but more importantly in time and lost opportunity as the blighted vale would remain blighted for that much longer." Claudia smiled at Klaus. He looked so enthusiastic, so happy, when he was talking about that civil engineering project. With promises of peace, cooperation of the dark queen herself and of course with lady Celestine's blessings, an effort was initiated to find and fix or at least mitigate the cause that was rendering the valley in which Levantine keep was planted to be a mostly barren land and transform it into something that could help the dark citadel sustain an... alternative economy to one of eternal strife.

It was a grandiose dream, one Claudia was happy to share and be part of, and couldn't wait to tell her children - their children about as they grew up. But I also understand you're less likely to make a mistake when you can see the figures in sunlight, and are not exhausted." At that the nobleman's face eased into a more peaceful smile. He exhaled and nodded. "You're right, Claudia... you're right. And I have no right to neglect you for this." He approached her and they joined in an embrace. Something they were still doing quite often, and yet it never got old. And, Claudia thinks, they always end too quickly. This one does, too. Fortunately, though, it's just for a moment. Just for as long as it takes for them to walk over to their tent, where they would join their son on his voyage through the land of dreams. To share the time of rest, so their waking hours could be spent in support of the dreams of others.

(Also, is it correct to assume that Levantine Keep is the northernmost human fortress and thus the closest to Olga's domain?)

>>6124382 Well the orcs and ogres are still there. At least those who survived the battle with Alliance forces while Mouse was en route to Atlassia. When the Beast fell, they horde broke and scampered back north, Olga would be rounding them up and bringing them to heel as she returned (and began the arduous process of finally bringing them into something resembling a society and civilization).
Anyways now for the final variant of the epilogue. Sorry if some of them feel more incongruous or rushed. I really wanted to manage before the thread fell off... and it looks like I've made it.
Thanks for being with me on this journey. Perhaps we'll meet again.

Elle. The courier. Of course... that is to say, it felt somewhat natural she'd feel affection for you. You did save her, as you were returning from that fateful mission... ...but... ...were you misunderstanding not only her feelings for you - but also your feelings for her? It was true that you've come to rely on her, and trust her. You didn't need her to make a formal oath of undying loyalty, but she gave that to you anyway. You thought back to your emotions in that moment, how her eyes gazed into yours as she recited the words of her oath. There was depth in those eyes, behind the words she had shared. A connection you didn't allow yourself to admit, not in the world as it was, not in the face of the mission still before you. But now... now, perhaps you could return those feelings, if they were there and not merely products of your unbridled hope... There was only one way to find out. You'd simply have to ask. And to do that, you first need to go back...

You open your eyes to a changed world. Stone floor against your body felt as real and solid as before, and the sky above looked not that different from any other day when cloud cover was breaking, heralding onset of a sunny day. Even so, something had changed. You could feel it in the air, in the light and in your own soul. And you could hear others' response to it as well, as a chorus of cries rose up from the overgrown ruins around, cries of joy and liberation intermingled with cries of anxiety and fear, as the shadows scattered, their deceptive promises dispersed by the beams of light. You got up and looked around, taking in the awkward awakening of the mercenary camp, the impossible embrace of the former mercenary lord in arms of those he sought to use and discard, and awed footfalls of your companions arriving from where their final stand was brought to an abrupt close. The fighting was done. Perhaps not forever and not all the fighting, but the bondage of despair was broken. It takes one more breath, and then the cheering starts. With Sparky being the loudest and most enthusiastic. Come to think of it, you're not sure if you hear anyone else as the winged boy dances around in celebration, but smiles on faces of your companions are enough for you to enjoy the moment.

Once the moment passes, everyone is still looking to you as they look for a path forward. On impulse, you take this chance to thank everyone gathered for their part, and for the trust and faith and hope they had placed in your quest. In ways of going forward, you decided to take upon yourself - and your companions - the task of bringing the remaining residents of the ruins of Atlassia back to the Cathedral City, the captured slaves and penitent mercenaries alike. And there was a lot of penitents, despite the fact that many had chosen to flee rather than stick around for the goddesses justice, or dropped dead if they had embraced the beast's corruption fully. In any case, there was a lot to do still. Better to get started right away. Better, perhaps, to occupy your mind, you think to yourself as your gaze stops briefly on Elle's jubilant visage. And sure enough, the day flies by busily, touring the ruins, tending to the wounded, comforting those who had difficulty believing the nightmare has well and truly ended, watching light return into eyes of those who had long since lost their hope. It was well past sunset that you felt confident that you've traversed enough of the ruins to be reasonably sure that whatever was left could wait for the next day. But you were not quite ready to retire just yet.

She was not in the camp that has been set up for you and your companions at the foot of the ruined temple. You had thought to take that chance to see if Elle was not sleeping so that you could talk to her. She was not. But where could she be? [i:lit]Eyes up, my champion.[/i:lit] Whether it was just breath of the wind or the voice of the - now considerably more distant feeling [i:lit]Hey! I take an exception to that.[/i:lit] - voice of the goddess, you find your gaze rising against the starlit sky. And there, at the edge of the shadowy mound of the ruined temple, a glint of something golden attracts your attention. A silhouette against the backdrop of the velvet of the firmament. You knew where you needed to be. She notices your approach almost immediately and waves at you. You wave back. "Sir Mouse, you can't sleep either?" She asks, her voice clear and singsong. A quality a shadow of which you recall from when you've wrecked the cultist mage's operation in the Cathedral City, after she was reunited with her friend. "I probably could, but I was looking for you." She blinks in surprise. "Me?" "Yes..." There's an awkward moment of pause as you scramble to decide what to actually say next. It takes log enough that as you look at each other you can tell her cheeks darkened slightly even in just the light of stars and the moon. "...what... can I do for you?" She is actually the one to speak first. But the slight tremble in her voice as she asked that, ignited something in you. "Elle..." You said her name, and her eyes widened. "S-sir?" You feel your stomach sink a little at the honorific, as a concern emerges in your conscience - if you tell her how you feel about her now, wouldn't she, consciously or not, interpret it as a command from someone she swore an oath to? That wasn't something you wanted. But what was the alternative? Withhold your feelings? Deny her if she had felt the same? No, that wouldn't do either. "May I join you?" "Of course." She smiles. You take a seat, a few steps below her, to keep your eyes on level with hers.

"Elle. There's something I hope to talk to you about... but not as a leader or someone you swore an oath to, but as an equal." "...sir... I mean, Mouse?" Her smile fades, or rather transforms - from one offered to a friend to one that would hold promise and anxiety of holding something delicate in one's fingers. "I..." You begin, then trail off and discard what you were about to say as it sounded too pretentious as you reviewed it. Then you pick up again. "I don't..." You begin to think to preempt some misunderstandings, but stop yourself short. Was this normal? Was this because you were an ogre? You were trying to talk to someone you've fought alongside of... why was that so difficult, after speaking with a goddess and facing the Beast itself? If you were to approach queen Olga, or lady Celestine in this manner, you expected you'd have trouble expressing yourself, but this woman you've commanded in fight... Perhaps that was in fact what made so difficult. Perhaps you ought to keep it simple. "I love you, Elle. I want to share my life with you, not as my subordinate, but as my other half..." You were considering whether to continue speaking. There were things you could bring up that could make your shared future difficult. "Mouse!" The blonde courier gives out a muffled cry, covering her mouth with her hands. But only briefly as her next movement is to launch herself against you and suddenly you find yourselves in a mutual embrace. "Mouse... you... I don't think... I don't think you have an idea how I longed to hear those words. I thought... it was an absurd dream, a fantasy I'd one day get over. And... perhaps I would've. But now... now I'm not going to let go. I'm never going to let go." "Elle..." You hold the blonde knightess, reciprocating her embrace, and felt so light you could float off the top of the temple, as a burden you didn't realize you were carrying fell off the moment her warmth joined with yours. You wouldn't be letting go either.
