I agree that playing things straight when dealing with strange or otherwise extreme subjectmatter seems to become a lost art. There's a time and place to be tongue in cheek, but doing it constantly mostly just makes it harder to give something ridiculous a chance to take seriously or it just becomes a hamfisted allegory overshadowing an honest experience that you can reflect on later.
