I'm going to ignore all the whining about the sequels themselves and feminism and so on and tell you all what actually happened: Oversaturation. Disney cranked out three movies in rapid succession and burnt out the market. In just three years they managed to do to Star Wars what took ten years to happen to Bayformers. The hype is gone, the craving is satisfied, and they haven't given enough time for a new audience of kids to grow into the brand and buy the same characters the previous audience bought. The latter leads right into The Bumblebee Problem, ie: "I'm not buying that, you already have a(n) [character name]."

tl;dr: Disney could've taken it steady and milked the franchise for years but instead they dehydrated the cow.

They produce for case assortments. Even if someone's only one to a case, they can still end up warming pegs once the store's opened up a dozen. And if they doubled up on revan or K2, they'd eventually wind up swarming harder than a hive of bumblebees after a bay movie and the story would be "oh, people don't actually buy EU characters, let's never do that again. Retail influences the hell out of toys, and it's never going away.

Also what's the oldest toy you ever found in store? I found a first wave Movie 1 Jazz in a Walmart in 2011 looking for Generations. Would have gotten it too if they didn't want full 2007 price for the damn thing.
