I'll definitely go hunting for brown cardstock to replace the construction paper that's serving as the ground right now. The creases in the paper have bothered me as well. I'd also like to try putting some elevation changes into the ground, but I'm worried about whether it would make it difficult to stand minifigs without baseplates.
My table is about 30 inches deep as well, which has been useful. For lighting, I shine the big lamp straight at the back wall, turn on the ceiling light, and also turn on another bright lamp a couple meters to the left of the table. It's a bit haphazard, but now that I have backgrounds, proper lighting is next on the list.
