The point of shading is to create darker shadows in recesses and such that would not be as pronounced at a small scale.
When shading a human figure, depending on how realistic you want to get, you might also want to apply redish/pinkish/brownish shades where human skin tends to have that particular coloration (inner sides of joints, knuckles, bottoms of feet, cheeks, etc etc).
