The thin paints thing is a fucking meme, just don't overload your brush like a retarded caveman and dip it in a tiny bit of water and you'll be fine. I just paint straight out of the bottle (Vallejo and AK paints) with a tiny bit of water and it's fine, pic related. I don't fucking wait 60 seconds or anything either, although you SHOULD do that with certain paints, like metallic ones as some of them kind of smudge with repeated strokes if not fully dry.
Don't obsess over how things look super up close either, at least not if you actually plan to play. Once all your units are bunched together and on a table it becomes impossible to pick out any tiny irregularities and mistakes.
